Where do I start??

My FI and I are registering this weekend at BB&B and Macys (and maybe Target?). Should we have some sort of list of things we plan on registering for before we go? What is a good plan of attack? I have no idea how to do this.

Re: Where do I start??

  • I thought that people just created their registries online for these places instead of going to the physical store.  Poke around on the websites and see if they have any info there. I'm pretty sure you can do everything you need to do online.
  • There is a sticky at the top of this board with suggestions on what to register for. You can go with a list if you have certain things you want to make sure and remember to register for. Or just go and wander down each aisle and register for whatever hits your eye. You can always update it online
  • Oh okay, I will definitely look into registering online. And I'll check the link for suggestions. Thanks!
  • Be careful about registering online.  Many items are only available online.  Check to make sure that the majority of your items can also be purchased from the bricks and mortar version of a store.  Otherwise you may end up with some frustrated guests that are not happy about shopping online.

Good point, I never thought of that!
  • We needed a lot of household items, so I used the registry checklist BBB has on their website and adapted it to our needs.  I took a couple different colored pens to distinguish between stores and checked things off as we went, so that we wouldn't register for the same thing at two different stores.

I would skip Target.  There are tons of accounts of customer, cashier and computer error that result in duplicate gifts.  And their return policy doesn't make up for that if you want to exchange the duplicates, as you can only exchange a couple items per year.
  • gottahavashorti  - thanks for the info, I had no idea that BBB had a checklist.
  • Skip Target, love the store - hate their return policies. They only allow each person a couple of returns a year and that includes wedding gifts so if you had 10-15 things to take back, you couldn't.

I would suggest going to the stores for the initial registry. Both of the stores you mentioned will give you a "gun", when you find something you like you point it at the bar code, click the button and it is added to your registry.  Then when you go home, you can go online and add anything you see online that they didn't have in the store.

The check lists sound like great ideas, you can use a vendor's or create your own. Think about the things you've used at your parents that you don't have but would like to have. If you want linens for your bedroom or bathroom, figure out colors and how many before you go. Talk to the sales associates about the best sheets - you might register a top of the line set and a middle of the line set - your guests can choose which to purchase if they want to give you sheets.  Register for bathroom & kitchen linens, pillows, even beach towels.

Look at fine china, crystal, flatware.  Be warned that some brands NEVER go on sale (they do sometimes offer a soup bowl with purchase of a 5 piece place setting - doesn't sound like much but the soup bowls aren't cheap).

You can register for cleaning tools, picnic and camping gear, etc.  Art, lamps, pillows, Choose pans, baking pans and tools, etc.

  • Great ideas, thank you!
  • Here is the BB&B checklist they will give you in the store: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/regchecklist.asp?  The knot also has some checklists in the registry section.  I think it's helpful to register in the store, as I like being able to see things.  Also, at BB&B the rep helped us pick out our fine dining setting by putting all the pieces together on a table (china, flatware, stemware)... it was very helpful to see it all together.  I'm not sure I would recommend going to two store on the same day.  We only registered at BB&B, and it was kind of exhausting since there was so many things we had to pick out and the options to pick from were a bit overwhelming.  Also it's a good time to work on compromise (ex. I picked out fine china and FI picked out everyday dishes). GL and have fun!

  • I agree with PPs - it was easier to go to the store to start the registry, then update things online afterwards. We also went to the store more than once. A couple of other things that BBB will do that I thought were helpful - if you are still registering when they close the store, you can stay as long as they are there to finish up (and the store associates told me that they are there for a few hours after the store closes, so there's no need to rush). Also, if you are picking out china, ask the registry consultant to add all of the pieces in that pattern to your registry. They can do this with just a few clicks of the mouse, and then you can edit and delete online later, which gives you more time to really think about which pieces, how many of each, etc. you really need.
  • There's also a Macy's checklist and faux registry. They're both way overdone IMO, but they give you an idea of where to start.
