Don't know what to register for?

Since this comes up time and time again, I thought maybe we could compile a list of things you might not think to register for but are useful.  If you guys want, I can make this a sticky.

Here are my suggestions, C&Ped from another thread with a few additions:

-tools (I believe Sears has a registry)
-a fireproof safe for documents
-an air mattress for extra guests
-formal china
-crystal glassware
-nice silver
-toasting flutes for the wedding
-cake server set for the wedding
-fun appliances, like an ice cream maker or panini press or espresso machine
-patio furniture
-decor items (picture frames, photo albums, candles)
-nice wall clock
-storage boxes/organizers
-steamer for steaming dress clothes
-extra sheets to rotate in and out
-extra towels for when yours start to fray
-matching accessories for the bathroom
-wine fridge
-barbecue grill
-barbecue tool set
-fun baking gear--cookie cutters, shaped cake pans, pastry bag decorating set
-table linens (cloth tablecloth and napkins)
-napkin rings

What else?

EDIT: Let's keep this to physical household registry things, not other types of registries altogether.

  • I would add camping and/or skiing gear, if that's your thing. REI has a great registry, from what I hear.

    Lilypie Premature Baby tickers
  • Variety of bar ware and serving pieces for entertaining
    Digital picture frame
    Cookbooks
Cool random things like a pizza stone
    Apron, potholders, kitchen towels
  • Tea kettle
    Good knives
    Holiday decorations
China storage bags, especially if you don't have a china cabinet or have a small one

A lot of these suggestions would only work if registering somewhere versatile like Target, but I figured I'd put them here anyhow.

    Regular Stuff:

Paint, nails, staple gun--home improvement stuff if you own.

Pillow upgrades! Cheap pillows end up flat within 6 months. Register for some great ones that are expensive and durable.

Outdoor stuff--snowthrower, lawn mower, garden hose, gas cans, weed whacker.

    FUN STUFF:

Game systems or a blu-ray DVD player.

    Digital Cameras, printers, etc.

    Yard games--bocce, croquet, horseshoes.

Board Games you love to play.

    Hobby stuff-camping, fishing, outdoorsy stuff.

EDIT: If you don't have very many place settings, register for more of your same type of dish! Service for 6 or 8 might be good enough for 2 of you, but by the time you have kids running around it might not be enough.

  • Good idea Brie!  I'll add:

    nice wooden hangers
    closet organizer system
nice mirror for the bathroom or bedroom
    decorative baskets for storage
    curtains
    lamps
    slipcovers
books, like classics or advice or self help books
food, like cheeses or fancy oils from Williams-Sonoma
    computer software
  • Or...really, any holiday decorations.  Just be careful, as they're seasonal and might go out of stock before your wedding if you register too early.

    Good one, whits!

And for those who are building or renovating their homes (you may have to use a universal registry for these):

Kitchen and bathroom cabinet door knobs and drawer pulls
    Medicine cabinet

  • Vases

we're registering for some "reach" items that are more expensive and people may or may not get for us, but it's not a big deal if we don't get them like
    Kitchen Aid Standing Mixer
Global Knife Set (which can also be broken down to individual knives)
    Nambe bowls
  • Gardening tools
    Rugs

We are registered for sturdy items that will replace the plastic, cheap, and worn ones we've been using since college. Guests will appreciate that we will cherish these for decades to come.
  • What about bedroom items? What would be appropriate to register for?

I would dissagree with the REI / outdoorsy suggestions.  When people buy wedding gifts (myself included) they like to get something that is going to be a part of the couple's home and life together, NOT something they are going to rip turns on for a couple seasons.  I live in a mountain town and am as active as the next girl, but tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, and ski poles aren't appropriate items for wedding registries, even if yours is worn out.

That said, I think tools and yard / garden / patio items are fine, along with the standard kitchen items, linens, etc.

What abou for the couple who already lives together and have all the housewear things they need? I thought the whole point of a wedding registry is so that the guests can buy something that the couple wants, not something the guest thinks they need. Ours is going to end up a list of things we;ve wanted but never managed to buy ourselves. We have a kitchen full of utensils, plateware, and glassware. We have walls with art on them, and a bedroom full of linens and luggage. I think the getting sporty equipment for a sporty couple would be appropriate if that's what they want.

I agree....when I have bought things for friends that have gotten married I always got them something they would enjoy. Some of my friends live for camping and outdoor activities so that is what I bought them because I know they would get great use out of it and enjoy it together. I think those kind of register items are fine.
  • One of the smartest things,I was ever told was from my great-aunt. When registering for china-the place settings and soups are of course a must. Whether it be service for 8,12,or more.
Aa far as serving pieces go- a platter - it would be great to have a large and a small one but if only 1-then choose the large.. A serving bowl -2 would be great but 1 is a must. A suger and creamer are very useful. Last but not least-a gravy or sauce boat -maybe with stand. These are the 5 musts for serving pieces. all the rest is very lovely but not a must.  Good luck!!

  • When my fiance and I moved into together we both had everything and than did some remodeling and bought newer stuff.  We seriously have three of everything and are slowly trying to get rid of things.  We will definitely struggle with a registry.  We both are the type of people when we want something we buy it.  Im so tempted to register at Walmart for toilet paper , 30 cans of green beans and 100 pounds of dog food.

I love the REI idea we always could upgrade our cheapo stuff to nice stuff.  We have not decided on our honeymoon yet but I did see if you choose Sandals resorts you can register for people to buy you adventures like snorkeling or just contribute towards your honeymoon.
  • how about things for the honeymoon, scuba lessons, or a special private tour, a gift card to a nice restaurant would be great for a couple who has kids & don't get out a lot otherwise
