Having your dress made?

Is anyone having their dress made?
What are your concerns?

Some homespun gowns are gorgeous, while others look structurally unsound...

Re: Having your dress made?

  • I had my gown custom made from my design, but it wasn't "homespun"-- I went with a professional. One of my big criteria was that I have someone who knew how to build a solid internal structure. It's very important to look at the person's previous work and skill set and be sure that you trust them and enjoy working with them. My guy ended up finishing my gown the day I got on the plane to fly to the wedding, but since I trusted him and knew he'd do a fab job, I never stressed about it for a moment. It's also important to discuss how and when they expect payment, how flexible they are about making changes during the process, their fitting schedule and time requirements, if there are things they aren't comfortable with, etc.
  • I had mine made, but not homespun.  The seamstress who made it is a professional designer.  If you're wanting to achieve a very specific look - as I was - that may be a great option for you ;)
  • I've sewn for over 40 years, and am making my own gown. I'm mixing 3 patterns that have exactly what I want, but different aspects in each pattern.

For me, it was a cheap and easy decision. The dipioni silk with pearls sewn on every 3-4 inches was on sale for $5 a yard at Joann's. I bought the entire bolt of 8 yards, and none of my patterns need more than 6 yards, including the train.

A good seamstress can do whatever you want, including the boning and internal "support".

If you look around and google a lot, it's possible to find someone. However, I would personally never use someone that is not local, as I have experience with sewing, and know how important a great fit is, and making changes as the dress "develops".

    Good luck.
