African American Weddings

As a guest, how would you feel about...

mini-comfort foods as appetizers?

grilled cheese and soup
mac and cheese bites
hamburger sliders

you get my drift.

Please be honest...my tasting is on the 25th and I'm beginning to think the menu draft we have now isn't "fun" enough...lol.

As it stands we are serving...

Pre-Reception: Grits Station (I'm a country girl) with shrimp, sausage, and cheese options, fruit, cheese & crackers

Reception: Beef carving station, raspberry chicken, asian vegetables, potato bar (garlic mashed and sweet potatoes w/ toppings), vegetable crudites

The caterer's food is yummy, but she doesn't have a menu so we have selected thing based of her suggestions and things most people like. I think it lacks creativity and just need some suggestions.

Sidenote: I hate to flood the boards today, but I'm officially back at it so I have a lot on my planning plate...no pun intended.

So are you keeping the grits and the rest? If so, the mini apps would make a nic addition but with or without you have a wonderful menu. Save me some of those grits, girl!

I was actually going to ditch the grits...you make a good point though. Maybe I can just add a little something to jazz it up. This is why i hang out here. Good suggestion...

I love the Grits station idea, I have never heard of something like that. To me for a Pre-Reception thing that is really creative and adds a touch especially if you are Southern? Do you live in the South? Or are you from the South living somewhere else bringing the flare along?
Burger sliders and stuff is cool too.

The grits thing is really cool. I'm going to introduce it to my mom. She is a caterer and always looking for new things to suggest to her clients.

Your sounds delish! As a guest I would love mini-comfort foods as appetizers. Grilled cheese is my favorite.

I don't care for the comfort foods part or I guess what you are suggestting, it reminds me of elementary school food and not wedding or anything for adults, not that adults don't eat it but no one serves it to you once you're an adult. As a guest I would have to be starving to eat it but I still wouldn't want it.

The rest of your menu sounds great.

Girl that grits station sounds so good. I wanna come...lol

    @ 1TriniDiva...you should come. You aren't far away. :)

@ drjewell...you're answer has captured my wedding planning personality to a tee...lol. I'm something like the anti-bride...I tend to avoid "weddingy" things in my plans...idk why, but I have realized that and I guess I'm beginning to embrace it. Thanks for you input though. I have to consider that I need a variety in case some guests share your views of comfort foods should I choose to add them.

Sounds good! I'd rather have some good southern food fill my belly than some little finger foods that no one recognizes!  You could probably dress up the appetizers by using cute serveware...you know step it up a notch, maybe add garnish.

I like the comfort foods idea only because they're everyday foods we wouldn't expect at a wedding. If you're going to go with them, see if there can be a twist put to them without them being the typical comfort food flavor. I like the grits station idea too.

Umm that grits station has my mouth watering!! I think that sounds great plus your idea of the mini comfort goods is great. But you have to gauge your guests palate, are they adventerous or not?? If not (or even if so) if the comfort food is tasty and well presented I think its a hit...

...but back to those grits...yummy!! LOL

Hi Eagles... I think it just depends... You gotta consider your crowd as well as what you and the groom would like.... The comfort foods/appetizers sound fine to me maybe in the cocktail hour... That's where I think they would make the most (FUN)impact. While folks are mixing and mingling... but the rest of your menu sounds great...

I am drooling on my keyboard over here about this grits station. I love that idea! Oh, I could go from some shrimp and grits right about now.

    Thanks for your input everyone.

I am keeping the grits station and plan to ask the caterer if she has any "cute" suggestions for comfort foods to accompany the grits station during the cocktail hour. I will probably leave the dinner menu alone.

You ladies are always so helpful...
