Question about JP + recommendation

What do JPs normally cost?  FI and I are planning on getting married legally first before the actual wedding and it will be on a Saturday (need to accomodate certain guests that can't make it to the actual event) so I don't think the courthouse will be available that time and we will have to get it done with a JP.

And can anyone recommend one in Farmington?

And one more question, if I get married legally before the event, I don't need to do anything on the actual event right?  Meaning I can just grab anyone to do the "marrying" right? lol

Thanks in advance!

We used Sara Carson.  She's fabulous.  We just did a small thing on a hiking trail with 2 friends and the JP.  She came from the Harford area and only charged us $75.  I think she's normally around $125-$150, but we didn't do a rehearsal or anything fancy.. no real audience, etc.  http://www.sarajp.com/

And yes, as long as you have someone that is qualified to do the actual marriage ceremony & license, you can have someone else do your public ceremony.  That's what we did.  We wanted our friend to officiate our wedding in front of our friends and family, so we opted to do the little thing with the JP to get the legal stuff done.  Our friends and family still felt (as did we) that our ceremony in front of them was when we got married... it was the sentimental special moment for us.  The other option is that many JPs are fine with witnessing as someone else does the ceremony.  As long as they are present, witness the vow exchange, etc. they will take care of the documents to make it legal.... you should ask them though if you're thinking you might want that... not sure if they're all open to that.  It eliminates the need for two ceremonies though.

    Thanks for the info!

So you do need a witness for the ceremony?

you will need a witness, i believe.

i used Cami Roseberg Dews out of Bristol.  She charged us $190, including travel.  I am not sure of her current prices, but I know that for a ceremony that doesn't involve an entire audience, she normally charges less than she does for a big ceremony.

She was FABULOUS.  She's young, super nice, and really works to personalize your ceremony with you.  I would highly recommend her.

Sara said we didn't need a witness, but we had our friend there that was officiating the PM ceremony and her husband.  The JP should be able to clarify on that point though for you.  (fyi, our friends didn't have to sign the marriage cert either, so...)
