Brown with Black?

Ok, so I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks, so any help would be greatly appreciated...

Getting married May 2012, and my favorite color is green, but I want to accent it with chocolate brown

But obviously the guys will wear black tuxes

and I HATE black and brown together. Will this look okay?

Bear in mind my dress is champagne, and my FH will be wearing his dress blues.

Thanks!

Re: Brown with Black?

  • I think it will all look fine together--it's not like the black and brown are together on one person. You'll have guys on one side, girls on the other, and you in the middle to break it up. This is a pretty common question around here as brown has become a popular wedding color lately. I'm sure someone has pictures to share.
  • Yes black and brown go together. Our girls were in brown and guys were in black tuxes. I wouldn't wear black and brown on one person, but on different people they go very well together:

Besides your entire bridal party isn't even together in all that many photos.

  • Well if you like brown why don't you go with brown tuxes?

My cousin had brown tuxes for her summer wedding! her colors were brown and pink and they looked great!

If you want black tuxes, use green as the accent, and then girls in brown dresses?  or girls in green dresses with brown sashes or shoes?  You said you want accent...so just use it as the accent.  wrap the boquets in brown ribbon, etc.  Personally black and brown togheter make me cringe, but I would not mind it if the colors were on two different people.  Just not on the same person.
  • I think kristinanddan's pics looks great with black and brown.  You're FI will be in black so you may want to keep the groomsmen in black too.  (Which are you sure he's in dress blues in May?  FI is already into whites).

Just keep it simple with the color.  If brown is the accent color then bring it into the wedding in small amounts, like sashes or wrapping the bouqets.  With that many different colors I would think it would be easy to get carried away, but I think if you keep it simple it will look nice.

  • I was just in my cousin's wedding last weekend.  We wore chocolate brown gowns and the guys were in black tuxes and it looked great together.  I'd upload a pic...but I don't have any on my work computer.  ;)

I think tuxes are pretty neutral despite being black. You can put anything beside them and it'll be fine.
  • I think brown and black can definitely go together, but I totally get your concern. I often don't like the look of brown with black, either. But honestly, I really think it will depend on the exact shade and how much brown is on the dress. (I know you said "chocolate brown," but at some places that does vary.)

Browns and blacks tend to go together best when the brown is in a neutral shade (not too reddish). I'd look at the spectrum of browns near khaki (I know that's really light, but perhaps it's worth a second look) and near gray (they should be darker but still neutral).

    Good luck!
