Wedding Invitations & Paper

Cardsandpockets.com DIY Invites -- help!

I've been looking into using cardsandpockets.com because for the same invitation it is about $175-$200 cheaper from what I had found at a local printer. My only concern is that they do not have templates and I'm not very saavy on the graphic designing end. Just trying to get some opinions from anyone. If you used them -- how did you create everything?

Re: Cardsandpockets.com DIY Invites -- help!

  • I just googled and looked for backgrounds that I liked, I have Adobe Illustrator so its a graphic program, you could probably do it in word though?
  • So, I am completely new to this as well and in the same boat but I can tell you what I've figured out so far.  My fiance got Microsoft Publisher for me. Photoshop is a little pricey.

When you open publisher, you can choose to create your own paper size and then choose the size of your invites.  Then, you'll want to add graphics.  First, look at a lot of invites and see what style you'd like.

I used a tutorial to edit clip art in publisher. I just wanted some flourishes in purple for the sides so I found a flourish for free on microsoft's website.  I edited the points in it to make it smaller and symmetrical and I created one vertical and one horizontal one. Then i changed the color to purple.  I'm not gonna lie. It took a lot of time to learn how to do everything because I had never even used publisher before.  Here's the tutorial website:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA011196801033.aspx

Other people go to istockphoto.com to find graphics but you need to pay for those through credits you buy.  Some people have etsy sellers design them graphics.

I used Edwardian script for a cursive font for mine. Other people download free fonts from various websites.  I just used what came with publisher.

You can add a textbox and change the size of it to get your wording to line up how you want it to.

If you want more information on how to edit the graphics in publisher, let me know what you want to do and if I've figured it out, I'll tell you how to do it.

The cards and pockets people told me that you can also get the ink colors to match their products because they can send you special color codes if you request it.  Then you recolor your graphics in that color code. If you want help with that let me know because it's a little complicated.

Since I'm designing it myself, I'm trying to stick with a pretty simple design but you could look up tutorials and just play around with everything if you want to try to learn something more fancy.

  • Theresa - thank you SOOO much for that. I will defnitely check into the tutorial. Can you please email me at grneyz12 at yahoo dot com because I know that I will probably have some questions for you :)

  • grynz, if you list all of your questions at this post, then I will get the email and post the answers here. It's better to post them here because then others looking at this post with similar questions can also see the answers so it's more helpful.  If you don't want your questions posted for some reason, let me know.
  • Theresa -- no that is fine. I was just asking that way because it'll probably be a week or so until I can finally get going on this and I didnt want you to miss the post if I had questions.
