Elvis Wedding On the Fly in Vegas

OK, this is my first Knot post, even though I've been a member through two boyfriends and a relocation across the country while engaged.

So while we have our "Real" wedding planned next year (9.22.12), we decided to celebrate our anniversary this year by having a "secret" wedding in Vegas on 8/20/2011.  Yeah - two weeks away.

So while I'm rushing around trying to find a dress, wedding bands, etc. I realized that we need to decide on a venue and book it ASAP.

Has anyone had any experiences good/bad at any of the Vegas wedding chapels?  Being that it is just the two of us we don't need a reception or anything like that, and some of the places I was looking at include :

Chapel of the Flowers
Little White Wedding Chapel
Graceland/Storybook wedding chapel
Chapel of Memories
Vegas Weddings
Stratosphere
Wedding Bells Chapel

I know it's corny, but we have also joked about having Elvis walk me down the aisle...kind of an inside joke and since we will have the more formal event next year this will be the time to have FUN!  My only reservation is I have seen some pictures of some of the "elvis's" and while I'm not expecting the King himself to grace us with his presence, a little resemblance would be nice.

I know this is long, but any help / advice / past experiences would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Why would you not wait until next year for your "real" wedding?  What are you hoping to get out of this?

    Your "real wedding" is the day you each say "I do," sign a marriage license and make it legal.

    What you're proposing for next year sounds like a vow renewal, a gift grab, and a big fcuk you to your guests.

    Yay, Ziti.  I kept refreshing and here someone is.  I am having trouble "getting" this.  I mean, I am ALL for an Elvis wedding but why have two?  There is no explanation as to the impetus to be married in two weeks.

    Oh my god. How is it that people don't understand something so linear, so simple... You only get ONE wedding. If you were to marry the same person twice there would need to be a divorce in between. 
    It's not clear whether the Vegas wedding is going to be legally binding or just a "show"... Even less clear why you'd want it... are you not happy with the kind of wedding you planned for next year that now you want one in Vegas?

    It might be that your family knows about your plans and is ok with them, I don't know, but for the sake of getting some honest feedback from TK, let me tell you that no one wants to sit and watch a fake wedding where the bride and groom have been married for a year. It's even worse if you plan on not telling them, which would mean to downright lie to them.
    Now, if you realized this you could call next year's affair a "vow renewal", which is what it will be anyways, and you could get away with wearing a cute dress and throwing an intimate party. But mind you, no gifts!

    This was my question as well... if you want to have a fun secret wedding, elope.  Then no PPD later.  If you want the PPD, no fun secret Vegas wedding ahead of time.

    I'm interested to hear what sort of response OP comes up with... (it's fun, it's for health insurance, we want to do something just for us, etc)

    I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're also kind of making fun of anyone who has had the Vegas / Elvis wedding as their "real" wedding. We all chose Vegas for our own reasons, but not one of us chose it as an "inside joke." What you're doing is completely offensive to many of the brides & grooms here, not to mention the family and friends you are lying to.

    As an out and proud Elvis bride if I didn't have thick skin I would be offended from you thinking that an Elvis wedding is only ok for a joke or "not a real/fake" wedding.

    That said to answer your question it is quite hard to find an Elvis at a chapel that "looks" like Elvis. The way we chose our Elvis was by scouring youtube for videos of other elvis weddings and then picking the one we felt best suited us and our idea of Elvis.

    I don't see anything wrong with having a small ceremony now and then a larger one later... similar to how many celebrities do (e.g. Monica/Shannon Brown, Keyshia Cole/Daniel Gibson) I think it is your prerogative if that's what you choose to do. 

    To answer your actual questions - I believe a lot of brides who aren't using a hotel chapel or garden go with Chapel of the Flowers.  Many of them have used Travis Allen as their Elvis entertainment for their receptions (not sure if he would walk you down or not).

    A "secret wedding"?! This will not end well if you are planning on deceiving your family and friends for a year.  You don't have 2 weddings. The first ceremony is the real and LEGAL wedding no matter where you have it. The next ceremony would be a vow renewal, not a wedding. 

    If there is good reason for you to have to elope in 2 weeks, then just be honest with people. Do you really want to start your married life off with secrets?

    BTW, I agree with other posters. Our Vegas wedding was not a joke to us, marriage is not a joke!

    WOW.  I guess I was naive in thinking I would pull this up today and have half decent responses.

    I'm really sorry for those of you that are miserable in your "REAL" marriages and/or lives that you need to attack someone who was posting an honest question on here.  But...to each their own - a concept you should all embrace actually!

    Firstly, an Elvis wedding is not a JOKE, and by no means am I belittling anyone who chooses that option as it is a timeless tradition the millions across the country and probably the world have enjoyed.  My comment was that my fiance and I joked about actually DOING it. Neither thought the other was serious.

    What I should have done is rephrased the question and took out the back story and just simply asked what are the best chapels in Vegas, that way those of you with nothing better to do with your time other than put people on blast on THE KNOT would have been more receptive to providing actual knowledge/experiences/etc.

    Get over yourselves and accept that everyone is different.  We aren't "starting our marriage off in lies" and all that good stuff you guys came up with.  We are by ourselves on the west coast, we are having our reception and essentially a celebration back on the east coast next year on my grandma's farm for our 200+ family and friends.  I could care less about gifts or "extracting money" from anyone, I just care about making sure those in attendance have a good time and know that none of them would be able to afford a trip to Vegas so instead of only having those that could afford it, we decided to just have it be us.  Sorry that I called it the "Real Wedding", I referred to it as that as that will be when my Daddy walks me down the aisle as opposed to Elvis.  So maybe it will be a vow renewal, either way, the root question was:

    Has anyone had any experiences good/bad at any of the Vegas wedding chapels? 

    I'm 24, I apologize that I"m not a marriage aficionado like it seems most of you claim to be.  And finally, a big THANK YOU to J Jaye and empegues for actually ANSWERING my question and not trying to dissect it.

    Next time I'll just stick to Google searches.

    Nobody is claiming to be a "marriage aficionado" but why would you get married and then have your "real wedding" a year later?  Why not get married next year and in 10, 20 or 40 years, do a "vowel" (or consonant) renewal at one of the chapels?   I am still not understanding what you are trying to get out of the first wedding.  Are you looking to actually tie the knot?   If you do tie the knot in Vegas why are you getting married again?  I am intrigued by this.

    Also, you must care somewhat if you could care less about gifts...

    But don't listen to me as I am miserable in my current marriage.  Oh, wait..................

    And Empegues, you really don't see anything wrong with a "secret" wedding?   OP's words not mine. Just because you are a celebrity doesn't mean that you live by a separate set of rules of etiquette.

    I sure don't.  If that's what she wants to do, that's her business.  I'm not so self-righteous that I feel the need to throw an etiquette book at OP when she's looking for specific planning information and not a sermon about what is right and wrong.  Honestly, as a first time poster she got ambushed.  So I find it a bigger etiquette violation to attack her post than her having several ceremonies - whether they are real/fake, wedding/vow renewal.  

    And yes, we can argue that the nature of this forum allows for differing views and that she invited it by posting... but in the end no one comes on here to be jumped on.

    People were just giving you advice about how "secret" weddings are not the best idea. If we reacted negatively to your "secret", chances are that some of your family & friends will also. I think people here were just preparing you for that reality.

    We were married at Chapel of the Flowers last year and had a lovely experience there. They can arrange for Elvis if you want one.

    People were just giving you advice about how "secret" weddings are not the best idea. If we reacted negatively to your "secret", chances are that some of your family & friends will also. I think people here were just preparing you for that reality.

    So, this would be fine, if my original post went something like this:
    " Hey can everyone give me their advice and biased opinions on how "SECRET" weddings are not the best idea?"


    But, unfortunately, that's not what my original post said.  My question was about the chapels and Elvis' in Vegas.  I've never even been to Vegas.

    In any event, I was looking at "A Special Memory" chapel.  That one seems nice and I like that they actually have separate rooms for the bride and groom to get ready in.  And the secret wedding is not so secret...I mean, you all know right? LoL

    When you post on a public board, you will get responses even if they are not what you want or not in direct response to your question. That's just the way things are. Really people were just trying to help you. I am sure if you read through the pages on this board, you would find that people here are very helpful.

    DH & I had never been to Vegas before our wedding either and could not have planned my wedding without the help of people here.  Picked all our vendors based on suggestions and reviews received here and was not disappointed with anyone selected.
