QOTD 8/30

Do you plan to take FI's last name, keep your maiden name, hyphenate or some other combination when you're married?

  • I think I will be doing the same thing...keeping my first and middle name, dropping my current last name and taking FI's last name completely. FI doesnt really care one way or another I'm the one that wants to do it because once we have kids and stuff I dont want to be the only one with a different last name.

  • I don't have a middle name so my current last name will become my middle name and I will use FIs last name. It's going to be hard to get use to, but I'm excited about it :)

  • I want to keep my last name but I know it will mean a lot to FI to have me take his. I am the only child of my father and the last memeber of our family, plus I like being different and having a weird last name.
Since my last name (Yack) would not make a suitable replaement for my middle name of Lousie I think I will hyphenate my last name. I wont care if people call me Mrs. Ramirez and I probably wont tell anyone in FI family I hyphenated it but it will atleast make me feel better. .

  • I have finally made this decision. I had such a struggle with this because I don't want to feel like I'm giving up my identity to be married but I also have wanted to take FI's last name since we were 16 haha. I am going to take his last name and keep my current middle name. My last name will just drop completley. It was a really hard decision for me being a feminist and all but it really is what I want to do

At first I use to say I would keep my last name because Im my dads only child and wanted to carry on the name but then when I had my son and gave him my last name. Im feeling better about changing it to FI last name..Im excited !

  • I will be dropping my last name and taking his. My last name does not have the best reputation around here because of certain family members. All through high school it was "Oh you must be related to X." The first time I was pulled over by a cop for a brake light out, it was "Are you related to Y?"

  • Oh Lord. I JUST got finished changing my name BACK to my maiden name after my divorce (im a procrastinator) like 1 month before FI proposed. LOL. He said he would understand if I chose to keep my name. I told him that I would take his name. I don't have a middle name, so my maiden will become my middle name (again) and I'll be taking his last name. The ONLY place I am not going to change it again is at work. I work for a big company and it was a nightmare getting my name changed. As a matter of fact, its STILL not 100% correct at work.

  • I'll be taking FI's last name and switching my current last name to my middle- completely dropping my middle name.
  • I'll take FI's last name. It's what I always imagined I'd do. It might be a little tricky because I'm already published, so I might keep my maiden name for that. I'm hoping to end up in industry, not academia, where publishing will go way down and I hopefully can just use my FIs last name.

  • I honestly haven't decided. The first time I really thought about it was yesterday, when I started looking at it written out.

My dad only had girls, and his brother doesn't have kids, so the family name ends with my sister and I. So that's one reason that I'm leaning to just dropping my middle name and taking FI's last name.

But my middle name comes from family on my mom's side, and it feels weird to not have the combination together.

Either way, his last name still feels weird when I say it with mine...

My sister who's a hardcore feminist was actually mad at me for a little while for wanting to take FI's last name, lol. I'm taking FI's last name because I want to, not because I want to 'obey' him or anything like that-plus I don't have any attachment to my current last name and it just reminds me of horrible relatives on that side of the family.

I'm surprised to see how many ladies are going to use their maiden name as their middle name. I didn't know it was that poplar. Mine just wouldn't work for that at all. lol

My last name sounds nothing like a middle name, its French lol. But this was my Mom's intention when she didn't give me a middle name so I'm going with it. Her Mom did the same for her, but her maiden name actually sounds like a middle name!

  • I always thought that I would take my husband's name and drop my last name completely. However, I actually really like my family. A lot. And it turns out, I don't really like his family that much. So I have way, way more attachment to my name than to his name.

I also own my own business, and as such I have a lot of things tied to my maiden name, and it would be more intrusive on my life to change my name than it would for him to change his name, even just hyphenating. He suggested hyphenation, but I argued that if I should hyphenate than he should hyphenate as well. He didn't like that idea.

I have no problem being called Mrs. Wilkinson or being known as the Wilkinsons, but I'm not going to legally change my name. It would just be too much hassle, especially for something I don't want to do anyway.

Taking FI's last name and keeping my middle name. Dropping maiden name completely.

I'm very traditional, so I never really considered NOT changing my last name upon marriage, but I am having mixed feelings about it though. My last name is extremely unique and my brother probably isn't going to have kids, so I really hate knowing our name will end with my generation... And FI's last name is super common, so I'm just gonna be one of many soon. :-/

<div>I don't neccessarily think it's an obeying thing but it is pretty sexist for the women to have to change her name and for the guy to not even have to consider changing his. Granted I will be doing it but that is because I choose to do it. FI and I were considering just picking a last name together and changing our last name to that since that seems like the only other fair way to do it besides each person keeping their individual names but the more I thought about it the more I wanted to change my name. It just was a long hard decision for me lol. </div>
