  • I don't understand people who don't like cats.  That's my UO.  Unless you're allergic, like...cats are cats.  They're probably one of the most independent and unobtrusive pets you can have.  Why would you hate on the kittehs.

  • Sometimes I feel like in my circles, being okay with pet clothes is more unpopular than disliking pet clothes. I once got in a very heated discussion with SIL about it, but she can be so dogmatic about her opinions that sometimes I feel like if there was a leftist version of the SS, she would make a great prison matron.

My thoughts on the matter are that at some point in his history wolf-dog decided to come out of the darkness and settle beside the cave-man's fire, where he then developed a unique ability to survive as a companion to humans, including the fact that he is the only species other than humans who understands what pointing means. Because wolf-dog made this extraordinary decision, his descendants get to benefit from human technology, including extra layers for the making of warm.

Or maybe I read too many Jack London books when I was growing up.

FI HATES cats. He is also a tiny-bit allergic. He had a bad experience (if you can call 4 years an experience) with his ex's cat so he's written cats off forever. It makes me sad, because we can't have dogs in our apartment, and I want a pet to love on.

This ^^. Also, I think your insurance company should be able to deny your coverage if you're injured as a result of not wearing a seatbelt (unfortuantely, I don't trust insurance companies enough to actually think this is implementable). Same with motorcycle helmets and injuries sustained while not wearing one.

I don't trust people who are hattin' on the dogs!  Poor little ones!  How can you look at a puppy face and not go, "Awwwww."? Have you no heart?  Oh, wait, it's a cat heart... 'splains a lot!

    I kid (mostly).

ETA: Read fail.  I hate small dogs too.  Neighbor breeds miniature yorkies, and we call the little yappers "barking bedroom slippers".  I have to watch FI to make sure he doesn't go and punt them.  At any one time, there's up to 10-15 of them over there.  Talk about eardrum piercing barks!
  • Haha, good point Sarah. Though I suppose the question for me is whether the dogs feel it's a benefit to wear clothes. Honestly I think us human folk probably care more about it than they do. ;) Dogs seem pretty laidback about stuff like that.

I can see "hating" cats if you're deathly allergic, but I don't understand people who hate cats enough to want them to get run over, etc. I seem to have met a lot of guys like that in my lifetime, who gleefully joke about stuff like that because of their cat hatred. It's creepy and also, who hates any animal that much?

Warm clothes for the winter? I think dogs like those as much as people do. Anything else falls under the comic category. :)

And yeah, I don't get cat hate either. I love both cats and dogs, and I am impressed/amused every day by things my cats do. Currently I'm keeping my camera handy because I really want to get some video of Abby's "OMG THERE'S A BIRD OUTSIDE" noise, because it is funny and I want to share it.

So, how well would it go over when someone is lying in the hospital with a massive brain bleed or any other trauma, dying, slipping into a coma? The doctors just say to the family "ah, well sorry, he wasn't wearing a helmet. We'll just have to sit here and watch him die." Especially when that patient has faithfully paid their health insurance for years.

I agree that there does have to be a better way to make sure people wear helmets when on motorcycles, or seatbelts.

  • FI hates cats, but I think that's more of a scape goat. His mom took in 27 cats at one time and cared more about feeding and taking care of them than taking care of her kids.

I think where I live, small dogs should be illegal. ONLY because it gets really cold where I live and I feel sorry for them. It's also really cold for long periods of time. The little sweaters don't help. Maybe I just don't understand it, but it just seems cruel. I'm not saying to ban small dogs either but I think small dogs in -40 celsius is mean.

  • Sarah, I can see how dogs would appreciate a nice sweater in the winter-time. I guess I just don't have a personal grasp on whether it's technically necessary for them to stay warm. That's kind of the mindless point I was trying to make, because obviously people dress their pets for cuteness and/or extra (non-vital for survival) warmth. Though recently I went to the mall, saw a small puppy in an open-window car and it was 29 degrees outside. Three hours later, I came out and he was still in there alone. I was in the middle of writing down the license plate number to give to mall security so they could track down and notify the owners to come get their dog, when the owners came back and made me feel like I was overreacting. My dog-loving friends agreed with the owners, so this whole topic is just confusing to me. Maybe I should just stop talking about it. ;)

Also, I love the chattery kitty noise! I also like the cat trill that signifies the jumping-up-on-something-tall for my cat.

Some dogs, while they do have fur, do not do well in very hot or very cold conditions. I don't see the problem with putting a sweater or even little boots on a dogs paws to take them for a walk when it's very cold/snowy outside. Especially since a lot of times, rock salt can get in between the pads in their feet and cause pain/damage. I don't think it's stupid at all.

As far as what Dot mentioned way back in this thread - about prisoners working - I think that would be great in a perfect world. But if they did, they'd be working for free I'd assume, thus taking away the need to hire people and pay them, meaning less jobs for people who need them.

As far as the seatbelt laws, I don't care either way. I don't like the government telling me what to do either, but they aren't FORCING you to wear one. Don't wear it if you want. And if you get a ticket, oh well, it could have been avoided. I always wear my seatbelt and anyone who is a passenger in my vehicle has to wear one too. Your option? Walk or drive yourself.

I forget who mentioned it - but whoever said that people should be required to do pre-marriage counseling, well, I fully disagree. It's not my fault people are getting divorced all the time. I don't think I should have to take a seminar or counseling session because a bunch of other people don't know what they're doing, whether it's free or not. And I'm saying this as a person who's entire family has been divorced at least once, if not several times.

And I fully agree with cew about being happy that assistance is there for those who need it. I agree with J too, that there is certainly room for improvement, but I also don't get all worked up over someone having a blackberry and using foodstamps. Not every smartphone costs $500 and $90 a month. You can get a blackberry for $50 and have a pre-paid plan for $40 or $50 which is no different than having any non-smart cell phone anyway.

  • What does everyone think about Progressive's little driving habits monitor thing they're offering now?  For those who haven't seen it; Progressive will hook a module up to your car to watch how you drive for 30 days, and if they think you're safer than the average driver, your rate can be lowered, but they also promise they won't raise your rate as a result of what it shows. :-)

From what I've heard it's just a pass/fail type thing, it either gets you a discount or nothing lol; they won't tell you why or what it revealed.  Supposedly the things they look at are duration of most trips, how hard you stop and accelerate, top speed.

It's ok, I got ya Beats.

I don't think that anyone really pointed it out, I was just clarifying that part. Because I agree just putting your chihuahua is a pink tutu everyday is silly. But I think there's exceptions to all of these things that I wouldn't necessarily judge someone for.
  • I just thought of an unpopular opinion I have: I really dislike Google.

Everyone loves Google and all the great free things they give you like email, docs, cute applications, free webstats for your website, so on and so forth.  Why is it free?  Because they mine your personal data to attempt to sell you things, to sell data to advertisers, to figure out just how much they can squeeze out of advertisers, to take one competitor's statistical data and sell it to another, etc.

Real life example; they 'give away' Google Analytics for people to use on their sites to not only monitor traffic, but if you implement it fully on an ecommerce site, it can tell you where people are coming in from, where they leave, what they searched for before coming to your site, how much profit you made off of them completing a checkout versus how much you spent to get them to your site, etc.  To put it simpler, you are telling Google, the company you purchased pay per click ads from, how much profit you made from paying them for that click; i.e. they have all the information they need to figure out just how much they can charge you before you'd have to stop paying them, and yes, the fine print in the service agreement you sign with them lets their various units share your information with each other.

Gmail; as we all know they show you ads related to the emails you're looking at, but they also sell their 'enterprise' advertisers data based off of your emails, like how many people in Florida that have emails in their inbox related to X also have something related to Y?  Ok, target them for this specific ad.

I just think it's way too intrusive and if I don't trust them just based off of the easy things to see, who knows what they're doing behind the scenes with everyone's information.  Yes, I do have an Android phone, I needed it for work and I needed a physical keyboard so that ruled out iphone, and Blackberry's screens are too small.  I of course had to sign up for a gmail account to use my phone, and my phone reports my location to google, my searches from the phone report my location to advertisers, etc.
