What to float in the pond behind our ceremony

We are having a rustic, outdoor, evening, summer wedding. The ceremony is at 7pm with sunset not being until 8:30pm, so it will still be daylight during our ceremony. We are getting married next to a pond and the view of the pond will be to the right and slightly in front of the guests....so in plain view. I originally thought to have floating lights, i.e. candles of somesort in the water, but now I'm thinking this isn't necessary since it won't be dark. The recepetion will be held 100 yards away in a nearby flat area, away from the original ceremony spot.

So do I spend the $ for a hundred or so lights/candles or just have floating flowers or something in the water? IDK what to do!

Any advice would be appreciated!!! Thanks!!

  • I think as long as the immediate area around the pond is well kept (mowed, weeded, whatever) I don't think you'd need to add anything.  Let the beauty of the pond stand by itself.

During the reception, when it is dark, how about using some LED garden stakes out around the pond (not in it).  Something like these:

We have these in and around our gardens.  They are solar powered and automatically come on when it gets dark. You could set them up ahead of time and then when it gets dark, there they'll be! You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes.

  • I like Kathy's idea.  Besides, who would go retrieve all those floating candles after the wedding is over?
  • If anything, I would do flowers because they are biodigradable... Otherwise someone will be fishing out candles all night!

  • What about some kind of origami maybe?  Swans or boats or something could look really pretty...
  • Rose petals if anything. We got married in front of a pond and it looked great on its own.
