what's more important - time or money?

 laterbackstory:
i commute 25mins to work and spend roughly 45-50$ in gas a week, a number of my coworkers do as well and one just sent out an email bringing up the idea of carpooling - great. problem is though that ive really been struggling with getting back into going to the gym after work and ivestarted going straight after work, even going straight there, i dont get home until 6:45-7, which means we dont end up eating until after 7:30. im worried by carpooling i will lose the motivation to get up and go once im home and it will also eat into my evening even more and we will end up eating at 8 or later. so, im torn between the two.

just curious what you would do, based on that info.

Re: what's more important - time or money?

  • I'd go with time. Your health and the ability to have some free time at home are more important than saving money carpooling. If financially you reach a point where you HAVE to carpool, then money would be more important.

  • No matter what the circumstances, I will always vote for more time

  • Don't you know time IS money?!?
  • What about going to the gym in the moring and then carpooling to work?

Ehh, I was in the same place and I made it to the gym 3 times a week.

Carpooling for me is so.much.better because of the carpool lane.  It cuts my commute down by a LOT.

When I was going to the gym (and not just working out at home) I'd get home around 5:30-ish, change into my gym clothes and head right out the door.  I found that going to the gym Tues, Thurs and Sunday worked well for me.  Yeah, there were some days when we didn't eat dinner until nearly 9pm, but good planning and quick cooking meals (usually eggs) made it ok.

If your actual time won't be cut down, then, well, that's a different story, maybe continue to drive yourself, or see if you can try the car pool out for a bit and stop if you're not getting to the gym enough.  Part of it just has to come from you.  If you make going to the gym a priority, it shouldn't matter whether or not you stop at home first.

  • Do you go to the gym every weekday? If not could you carpool not on the gym days?

im trying to go to the gym atleast 5-6 days a week right now, including weekends, but its a real struggle for me when my time is encroached on. i already just do weights @ the gym and then do cardio in the evenings so that we can try to have dinner at a semi decent time. ive had a hard time making gym a priority as it is and thats why i gained weight so i am worried if i lose more time (which was part of the problem orrigionally) that it will just fail again. im not by nature strong on motivating myself when im tired.
  • I think right now going to the gym is more important. It sounds like if you carpool, that won't happen. I think you'll be happier if you continue to go to the gym and work on your fitness goals.
    image
  • Question unrealted to carpooling: Could you possibly do the gym before work? You'd have to go to bed earlier, but you'd get home earlier and thus could eat earlier.
    image
  • How much money would you realistically save carpooling? You could always take some money and buy a treadmill/exercise bike/your fave equipment for the house keeping in mind the money you'll save carpooling. Then when you get home from work, you could always work out after dinner. Or you could work out while DH makes dinner. This could be a potential compromise.

If that isn't possible, I'd say time.

it is important jas, but were having some money issues right now too hence my confusion what to do. ive had a few small breakdowns this week, about money and about my weight, and now its like i have to choose between one or the other.
  • Well needing to save that money does complicate things. Could you look at how much you might save, and then see if you could save the same amount by cutting back some other stuff?

I like OOTB's suggestion too . Can you work out at home at all? Is there an extra space that you could set aside for exercise?

Is working out at lunchtime a feasible solution for you? Maybe not going to the gym, per se, but going for a walk for 45 minutes or something along those lines?

Otherwise, I would say to maybe entertain the idea of getting up early to go in the morning.

i currently get up at 6:45 to get ready for work so id conceivably have to get up at 5:45 to accomodate the gym, at minimum and i honestly dont think i can manage that on a daily basis. im not the best riser and i would probably just say eff it and sleep in. i do do my cardio at home to "save" time as it is, but a lot of the weights i wanna do i need the gym for and we just dont have the room for it. im planning to sell/throw out/move most of our storage unit in the next few months to save money so im already trying to save.

i feel like im just being stubborn but i cant figure how to choose both.

lunch - no, our office just made our lunches 30mins instead of the hour it used to be and a girl did get in crap for changing into gym clothes before she left for the day (wate of time or something)

Nebb, I love you, but you're making a LOT of excuses, and that really has to stop.

Tough love raynes just showed up and this is what she's got to say:
Either you work out, or you get get fat.  Either you do it, or you don't.  I don't care if you suck at doing something right now, change.  Don't be that person anymore.  That person will be fat.  Don't let yourself decide no to do it.  If you don't correct the bad habit now and make exercise a part of your life that you just do, then you'll get and stay fat.

Do you like to clean the cat litter?  I know I don't.  But if I don't clean the cat litter the cat will poop in my shoes.  Think of working out the same way.  You might not want to do it, but if you don't, bad things will happen.  Just instead of poop in your shoes you get fat.

So, stop making excuses and just do it already.

  • Could you carpool 2 days a week, maybe on T, TH?  Then you could do the gym on the other days?  Maybe that would ework for both your wallet and your gym needs?

  • Raynes just made me hate myself.  Cry
  • You don't need fancy weight machines or a gym to stay fit. Save money on nutritious groceries, buy a $5 set of small weights, and a $5 jump rope. That will save you a gym membership AND gas money. I love the idea of working out while hubby makes dinner!
Any motion you do on a weight machine can be pretty lcosely replicated. There are TONS of moves to target certain areas. Plus, working out with your own body weight is generally safer.
If you need a gym-like atmosphere for motivation, put mirrors up and play a work out video with great music!
I had to drop my gym membership because of money and now that I"m in the habit of working out at home, I'm so glad I did!

  • So the issue is that you use the gym for weights which you feel you can't do at home. Obviously, you don't have the same equipment at home that they have at the gym. But who says you need the equipment. I assume you have a simple pair of handweights at home? Even if you don't, they aren't too expensive. Between that and household items you should be able to find ways to work most if not all muscle groups at home.

It just seems like if you could find a way to do your weights at home, you could carpool and get the best of both worlds. But I don't really see why you can't do at least some weight work at home. If you want to go to the gym 5-6 days a week, make 2 of those days weekend days. On those days, work on the weights/machines you can't do at home. On the workdays, at home work on the muscle groups you can do at home (I'm thinking arms). Most people suggest a rotation of muscle groups anyway, instead of doing all muscles a little bit each day.

    Could that work?

Oh Kim, Tough Love Raynes doesn't want you to hate yourself, she just wants you to stop making excuses and be better.  Tough Love Raynes isn't perfect, by a long shot (and needs to listen to her own advice more often) so don't feel bad.

bertke, there's not a whole heck of a lot one can achieve with a 5lb DB, except extreme boredom.  Nebb lifts heavy.  She's awesome like that.

  • I vote for time as well.  I recently made some changes that resulted in my losing about 30% of my income but it's also going to give me back a significant amount of time each week so I can hopefully enjoy life more.

i considered quitting my gym recently cause i was mad, but i found out the one i normally go to (across the street from my house, currently closed so im having to go to one further away hence more time crunch) is majorly expanding and the prospect was enough for me to not quit (well, and they offered me a free month because i was pissed) so quitting the gym isnt an option

i know it seems like im making a lot of excuses but i know me - i get tired or sad and lose all motivation to do anything. as it gets nicer out i will struggle more cause i will want to be in my garden or doing other summer things so i want to have as few"distractions" as possible to try and keep me from fucking up. im weak and i give into that voice easily.

For me, exercising is my #1 priority. If I don't have that outlook on it I can't motivate myself to workout. I do whatever it is that is necessary to accommodate my workouts and to fit them into my lifestyle/schedule. When I used to work in an office and go to the gym, there is no way that I would be able to come home in between work and the gym and then get my but off the couch later. If it was me I would have to skip the carpooling and find somewhere else to save money.
  • Nebb, I am the same way so I totally get where you are coming from.  I've pretty much completely given up on going to the grocery store with Scott because he knows if he waits around for me to feel like it, we will starve to death.  It can be really, seriously hard to find motivation to do things you hate (or at least like less than the other cool things you could be doing), and then you feel like a big loser which just pushes your ass further into the couch.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go put on spanx for further knotting as long as tough love Raynes is around.

Are there any 'summer things' you enjoy that are also physical? I mean, it's not like gardening is the same as sitting on the couch. Do you enjoy cycling, canoing, etc.? If you recognize this as a problem you have, maybe try and find a way to use it to your advantage. Doing fun summer activities could also help to try and prevent any weight loss plateau that could originate.

ssadly, no. ive never been very active which is part of my problem - dont own a real bike or outdoorsy things and anytime i want to pursue something i talk myself out cause of the cost. my summer things are really just reading outside, gardening outside, tanning outside, taking photos outside... just being outside and moderately quiet and lazy. i want to go do more summer things but none of them are overly active (bluegrass festivals is my new "thing" i want to do, but other than some walking and milling around, not very active)
