Outfit for FMIL?

Hi everyone.  My girlfriend and I are having a committment ceremony in October and are wondering how to handle a situation with her mother.  Her mother is a little odd and although she is actuallly well off she will often not clean her clothes for weeks at a time just to save a little money.  We are concerned about what she will wear to the ceremony and would like to take her out and help her pick out an outfit.  Is it in bad taste for us to offer to buy her something for the ceremony?  I'm thinking of just approaching it as though I want to have a bonding experience with her or something along those lines.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Not in bad taste at all - a girls' shopping and lunch date. =-)

ETA: You can explain that the day and the dress is you and your GF's treat as a thank you for all she's done in your GF's life.

  • Ditto Mrs B.  While you can't force her to wear something, there's no harm in offering to take her shopping and for lunch.  Maybe even get a mani/pedi?  Just a fun girl's day.  I like what Mrs B said about it being a thank you for all she's done.

Now, if she turns you down, there's really nothing you can do except tell her that if she changes her mind the offer still stands.
  • Mrs. B hit it on the head.

That does seem a bit odd, good for you for dealing with it civilized though. I'm all about money saving but clean clothes are on the top of my list next to food and shelter haha, guess that's from living in hurricane alley.
  • Another ditto Mrs. B.  You are looking for a solution for this, and what you are proposing is being done in a way that spares your FMIL's feelings and turns this into something that can be special.  Kudos to both of you!
  • Thanks for the responses.  Looks like we will have a ladies day out!
