When to register???

Hi! I am getting married on 6/5/2011. I am wondering when my fiance and I should register. I have heard about 9 months before the wedding, but I am wondering what you all think. Thanks.

Re: When to register???

  • You can register whenever you want, but just be aware that seasonal items may no longer be available, and china patterns and bedding linens, etc. may become discontinued, and you'll have to keep making replacement choices.  This will suck if you pick something, have your heart set on it, and they stop making it.
Six months is pretty safe to start registering if you think there will be any sort of shower thrown for you.  Check it from time to time to see if items need to be replaced.
  • I would wait until the 6 month mark so you lessen the risk of discontinued items, if you stay on top of it though that shouldn't be a problem. You should register before any events, showers, parties, etc.
  • It depends on the events that will occur between your engagement and wedding as well as your own circumstances. For example if you are having an engagement party, bridal showers and other such occaisions for gift giving then having at least a partial registry prepared is a good idea. Also some friends and family may choose to use your registry to purchase holiday or birthday gifts (I know I am hoping for this since we have so many things we need for a house.) Lastly if you are in a position where registering before 6 months is more convenient then go for it! I am a 6/18/11 bride and 6 months before the wedding is Christmas! I know that I won't be wandering through stores trying to decide on which blender to get while holiday shopping is going on so getting out there early is important. I will say that the above comments are correct, if you register very early be prepared to keep an eye on your registry and replace discontinued items when necessary.
(However if you'd like to know, I am getting married a week before you and I am already registered!)

At registries like the Pampered Chef  you don't have to worry about discontinued products. The products are always available and if something is no longer available, they will let you know or place it on back order. (I signed up for my registry here: https://www.pamperedchef.com/registry/public/initializePwsRegistry.tpc?email=mckayalicia@gmail.com&_localeString=en_us&pwsId=98411&enc=yjOr/m91NowLkdi9X5qrhg== )

It is one of the best registries because you actually get FREE gifts when people buy you gifts. The more people buy for you, the more you get. This is great because you can double the value of your gifts. With this kind of registry, I suggest you only have ONE registry so that it directs everyone to the registry that gives you the MOST rewards.
  • We registered at 9 months out and had a few things be discontinued but not a ton. We kept an eye on it and updated when necessary.  We had things bought like two weeks after we did it, people checked our wedding website and went shopping.  I personally woudn't go earlier than 9 months out cause you'll probably run into more things being discontinued.

  • We just registered last weekend and we have a little over 7 months to go.  I asked the woman who helped us if the pattern (we're just getting an everday set) was going to be discontinued and she said it was a new addition.  Ditto on the seasonal stuff.  Also, stuff that's on sale that looks like it could be out of the stores in a few months are probably good to avoid.  If things do get discontinued, you can remove them from the registry (unless it's like a pattern or something) and add something else.

  • We were married 6/4/2010 and registered at the end of November. Very few things were discontinued and that way people could use our registries for Christmas shopping. We had stuff bought off our registries right away (possibly due to Christmas sales?) so I'd say it was a  good time frame.
