Three tiers would look wierd? Isn't three normal???  I think you may want to order the bottom layer "fake" I think it is stryofoam or something.  This way the cake would be cheaper because I think 70 ppl you only need two layers.

We had about 75 people and did three layers with a faux layer on the bottom.  Pics in my married bio.

I think three would look just fine.  There are many pictures of 3 layer cakes in the knot photos.

A 3 tiered cake sounds fine to me.  It also depends on whether or not your guests are the major dessert variety.  My view is the more cake the better, but that is also tempered by the possibility of your venue/caterer providing alternative desserts.

We had our baker recommend a 3 tiered cake for roughly 100 people, but I remember my brother's wedding, I didn't get to taste the cake because so many people came back for seconds.  That's why I insisted on a 4th tier, just to make sure there was enough cake to go around.

Our cake ended up being a splurge and we went way over budget with it, but I was okay since we're skimping in other areas.

I had about 65 at my wedding.  We had 3 tiers and it looked great.  There is a pic in my bio.  We had a lot of cake left over too!
