NWR--50 fattiest foods in the states

http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20393387,00.html

I figured this would be fun to share since we are all from different states.

I know this is supposed to make you gasp and disgusted but some of this looks soooo good. I just got incredibly hungry. It didn't help that the first thing on the list, FI and I have made several times..though we did decide we like it better without the bacon so props for that?

I am personally partial to anything on this list that involves a hot dog.

Besides the bacon, the main part of it that's bad for you is that they only use 80% lean beef. I always buy the leanest cut of whatever meat we're having. I can't stand all that fat...but I am crazy and cut the "fat" off filet mignon too. ETA: Can I also say that I've never had or heard of liver mush before and I've lived in North Carolina my entire life? I was annoyed that another state got the Krispy Kreme burger. KK was founded in NC after all - and it's a new regular at the fair.
  • The garbage plate is a Rochester thing! I've been here for 6 years now and I still haven't had one (the combination of calories and just not liking what's in it). Don't think I ever will. The closest I've gotten was stealing a hashbrown from a friend's plate.

I remember reading this a while ago. Deep dish pizza from Gino's in Chicago is amazing, I love corn dogs and I love the hot dogs at the local chain in Buffalo (Ted's!). Also, are chocolate chip cookies really the best they could think of for MA?

Other than those, everything else on the list looks gross to me. But then again I have a limited diet...

  • I've lived in PA my whole life and I've never had a Philly Cheesesteak - probably because I don't like cheese. And Nevada just gets buffets?

  • New Hampshire got clam chowder? FI said, "It must be all the coast line they have..."  *eye roll* It would either be Maine or MA and Maine would obviously be the lobster roll.  We got a cookie? Seriously? MA is the only state you can get a cookie in? That's just silly.

I also didn't know Turducken was an actually thing, I always thought it was a joke.

  • Now I am really hungry. I am a little sad that Texas got the corn dog. Really!?! A corn dog. I feel right there with you Meg and the MA cookie. There were several things that looks really gross, but most of it I would eat.
  • Arkansas-catfish?? Catfish?? I understand friend foods are fatty, but there's other ways to cook something.. you can't narrow it down it down with the whole fish!? Weird list.

  • well I am glad Illinois got the Deep Dish Pizza; probaly the only thing I will ever eat on the list. Talk  about portion control.
  • Chicago deep dish is amazing!  It's one of about only 3 foods that I truly miss since going gluten-free.

  • Lamb was one too. Really?

When I think Catfish I think NOLA.  FI laughed that Texas was a corndog, out of all the possible things.
  • Wow.  I kinda got grossed out by looking at all the pictures.  Not gross like ew, gross like people seriously eat that?  I get those are bad but moderation people!

I don't agree with the one for MI either.  Only one restaurant has that near Saginaw and it's known for that.  I've been to the restaurant but have never had that.  The amount of bacon on that thing is insane and gross.

<div>I really like bacon.  But I think I eat less than that in a year.  Well, maybe half a year ;)</div>
  • Okay- I  do not agree with the cookie for MA, come on they can do better.

I lived in and live by MN- I have never been to a Dairy queen there ever. I think that is wrong.
As for the Cheesecurds for WI, that is not what I was thinking. I was thinking the Fish Fry, or for some of the  more in touch with thier German and Norweigan Heritage- the Cannible Sandwitch (Fi tried to get me to eat it, I never will, it' a bunch of raw meat on buttered bread with some type of cheese sauce)

  • I make something called a bacon explosion for the Super Bowl every year.  It's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen, but my FI and his friends LOVE it.  I slice it and serve it on biscuits.

  • I'm from New York and I've never heard or seen a garbage plate, I guess it's an upper state thing down in NYC we have never heard about it. I am born and raised here and when I clicked on the NY dish I was like what the heck is that? Ooo and the Eskimo ice cream ewww, anyone catch the pork brain sandwich eww.

  • Yikes! Being vegetarian (leaning vegan), means about 90% of that list is out of the question for me. Actually the only thing that even looked remotely appealing was the Ben & Jerry's ice cream!
  • Oh, and I'd say the fattiest Canadian specialty would be poutine--fries smothered in cheese curds and gravy. :)
  • I'm glad I can say I've never had the meat sundae thing in Iowa. I don't do state fairs. But I did have deep dish pizza in Chicago Wednesday hahaha

I'm originally from Long Island, but my  Dad' military job and my step-dads government job moved us around a bit. I have never heard of the garbage plate either.

<div>Apparently a lot of clams come from those 13 miles we have!  Haha.  I thought the same thing though when I saw that.  Some of these states were interesting, but most of them I thought were just boring or silly or made no sense.</div>

<div>A friend made the turducken last year for our 'friendsgiving' (friends getting together the night after thanksgiving...). andyway, it was actually pretty tasty. though, as with anything, I'd still recommend moderation :)</div>

  • FI and I want to make a turducken in  the next couple of years.

I don't even think it will taste good, I am just so intrigued by the idea that I've gotta try it.  I've never had duck.  We watched videos on how to do a deep-fried turducken. If we get a deep fryer for our wedding we might go that route.

  • Duck is definitely my favorite kind of poultry and one of my favorite meats. It's nothing like chicken it's really moist (no worries about it being undercooked) and fatty. Deliciousness. I highly recommend it. We made some last week with some Brussels and cranberry sauce. Orange also compliments it well.
  • Wow there are some crazy foods on that list that I've never heard of. People actually eat brain?! I almost threw up when I saw that lol. I do have to agree with the Wisconsin one though. I think I am addicted to cheese curds lol. Now that I know how fatty they really are, maybe I will be better with the self control.

  • Haha. Montana got Rocky Mountain Oysters. You have to do something with all those calf testicles! hahahaha

  • I forgot the turducken was three birds in one. I thought it was a hybrid, kind of like a beefalo (cow and buffalo).

Almost all that stuff looks tasty! I am so hungry now, and FI isn't off work yet. :(
