Can a corset back be added to this dress to add more room?!

I need some serious help!  When I tried this dress on at DB in a 10 it fit like a glove!  Once it got home and I tried it on it's waaaay too small and they have a no-return policy.  After this fiasco, I've heard this happens to girls who buy their dresses from DB all the time because the dresses you try on are stretched out from hundreds of girls trying them on.  When I realized I couldn't get it zipped I thought maybe I could add a corset back, but I'm concerned because it's an all over lace gown.  Any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks so much!

  • When you were at DB did they take your measurements? If they did, and you ordered the size they recommended I would talk to them.

I don't see why that dress couldn't be made into a corset back though. It could get expensive, though?

Yes, they took my measurements.  Hopefully they keep a record of them so I can prove I didn't gain weight if they suggest that is the problem.   I've heard that they'll charge around $250 to add a corset, but maybe since this is their issue in the first place it won't beas bad...All I can do for now is wait untill they open in a few hours to call and see what they say.

  • Just don't get your alterations done at DB. They're overpriced and underskilled from everything I've heard.

  • Defintaly call them, because if they suggested you order that size they should take some responsibility, but did you sign a contract or anything? If you did, have that with you when you call and just make sure anything they guarantee you over phone you get in an email or something so if you go back to the store they dont argue with you.
At the least maybe you can get them to comp the alteration charge for adding a corset as a comprimise?
  • If DB doesn't budge, I would call an upscale bridal shop and ask if they have references for local seamstresses. Those are usually the best ladies in town.
  • You didn't try the dress on when you picked it up?    DB probably isn't going to be that helpful, since you left the store with the dress.  You would have had more luck had you tried the dress on there and complained to a manager on the spot.

With that said, I don't see any reason why you couldn't add a corset to that dress.  When I was trying dresses on at DB, they said they could add a corset to any dress for $150.00.  I think that was a little high, and I probably would search for other places to get it altered, if you decide to go that route.

That's my dress as well. I didn't try mine on when it came in, or leave it there. I will schedule alterations later (I already knew I needed the hemline adjusted and the top brought in). Hopefully, since mine didn't fit like a glove, I will be ok! I will try it on when I take it to Mom's this week-end (its still in a garment bag in the car so FI doesn't catch a glimpse).

I just returned from vacation. I realllllllllllllly didn't want to try anything on for 2-3 weeks.

  • I am so sorry. I lost my mind and sidetracked myself. I agree with PP you should call and price adding a corset, and I would take it back to David's as well - fight with them first! I am having a hard time envisioning a corset on this one, and know I have seen them added to so many dresses! I am sure it is doable - but you shouldn't have too. My next question - when you tried it on at DB - were you decked out in a longline bra? Just the bra alone makes a HUGE difference. Maybe it isn't as small as it feels when you try on with different undergarments?

  • No, I didn't try the dress on at the store after it came in.  Yes, I realize I'm an idiot for not doing so now.  I assumed since the 10 fit fine in the store and they told me to order a 10 and not a 12 that checking the tag to make sure it said 10 was good enough. I'm a dumb ass, I know.  And I did have different undergarments on in the store, but I don't think that will make that much of a difference.  It's the ribcage where it's super tight and I don't have a lot of fat to me in that area.  I'm 5'11" and an averave/healthy bmi so even if I dropped 20 pounds, due to my frame and bones alone I couldn't make it work lol.
I did call DB and am meeting with the store manager tonight to see what we can work out. Fingers are crossed!

  • There dresses are supposed to be able to be altered 2 sizes up or down. Mine was a 14 it didn't zip all the way up. I took it to a local seamstress she let out the sides for me.
  • I am glad they are meeting with you! My mother would swear by the undergarments ;) but what it boils down to is making sure you have your dress for your wedding - and it doesn't matter what you tried on or size or didn't try on - what matters is getting it right for your day! Please let us know how it goes tonight! (and seriously - now I am soooooooo racing home to try mine on tonight after reading your post!)

  • That's stupid that they didn't measure you.  I would go back to the store and complain, ask to see the measurements they took that matched up with the size chart.

Also I'm surprised they didn't let you try it on when you picked it up!  I wanted to see how mine looked, I couldn't wait to get it on!

Something similar happened to me. My dress was was too tight when it came in and I had ordered the size that I tried on it the store.  Davids just did an even exchange for the correct size. Take the dress back to your store with the receipt and explain what happened. I'm sure they will exchange it.
  • I've actually had a corset back added to my dress at DB, but for the opposite reason.  I bought a dress with a zipper back and KNEW that I couldn't keep my weight up with all the stress of the wedding.  I suck at eating when I'm stressed :(.

It was roughly 90 bucks to have a corset back added, and I'd happily pay twice that amount for the peace of mind it gave me.  It relieved the stress 10 massages couldn't take care of, so all in all, super awesome deal!  After my final alteration, I actually plan to try to gain about 5 lbs before my wedding (to stop my current weight loss), and won't lose a wink of sleep over it, because of those wonderful wonderful laces.  Bless them.
