Will this dress be appropriate?

I'm recently engaged and my FI and I have barely began to talk about wedding details.  One of the things we mentioned was a beach wedding and he seems keen on the idea but doesn't give me a whole lot of response.  I just found a gown that is absolutely GORGEOUS and I am in love with it.  However, if we do decided to have a beach wedding the dress seems rather large, in my opinion for a casual beach setting.  Its champagne colored with white lace and is very "cinderlla-ish."  Any thoughts about this?  I don't want to settle on my dress but I don't want to stray away from our ideal beach wedding because the dress is to big.  Thanks!

    Hold off on the dress shopping... or at least the dress buying. You guys need to talk more about your plans and make some decisions about the wedding itself before you buy a dress. This is why so many brides end up with second dresses - they get so excited to go dress shopping and end up buying a dress before they know anything else about the wedding. so wait it out! and don't rush the wedding planning either. My fiance and I have been planning our wedding for nearly a year now, and we still have 9 months to go! But it gave us plenty of time to talk about so many different wedding ideas. The beginning is the most fun part when you're exploring so many different options. So enjoy it! Don't rush the planning. And definitely don't rush the dress shopping! Good luck.

    PS - I do think that a cinderella dress would be over the top for a beach wedding

    Wait until your plans are set in stone (non-refundable deposits and all) before buying the dress.  When our initial plans fell apart, we were all ready to run off to the courthouse, but that white dress hanging in my MOH's closet made me feel obligated to plan an event where I could wear it.

    Besides, you might get your Cinderella dress on and find it doesn't remotely flatter you.  From what I've seen, very few women end up actually buying the dress they absolutely adored on a model.  Personally, I fell in love with two dresses online; one wasn't nearly as nice in person, and the other just didn't work for me.  I ended up with a dress very similar to what I was considering, but a lot of women wind up with something that's completely different.  It's unwise to get hung up on a dress before you've seen it on you.

    Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

    Thanks!  That really helps!  We are going to have a long wedding process, right now out date it set in June 2011 (which may change as well because my brother is in the military).  I think the excitement of being engaged and all the possibilities got to me. Thanks again!

    Ditto the other ladies.

    Wait until everything is set and then buy a dress.  If you opt for a beach wedding, the Cinderella dress probably wouldn't work.

    But if you opt for a wedding in an elegant space that's formal but NEAR the beach, it could be perfect.  It's all in the formality that is set.

    As the others have said, WAIT to buy your dress.  You definitely need the wedding location and your venues and time of day secured before buying a dress. 8-9 months before your wedding is enough time to purchase your dress. Many dress companies have destination wedding lines. Those dresses are not "big" and are easier to transport. If you travel for your wedding you will have to schlep the dress yourself in a big garment bag.

    My daughter had a local wedding in Phoenix last year and she bought her dress at Uptown Bridal in Chandler from Moonlight Bridal's Tango Destination line. Suzanne's in Gilbert also carries that line. The dress was elegant, but not too heavy and big to transport around.

    Definitely wait on the dress. By the time you actually go shopping your tastes could change and your wedding style may change.

    And yes, a cinderella dress would look very out of place on the beach. That's small wedding pet peeve of mine, when brides choose colors or gowns or whatever that don't really complement their venue. It just looks off.

    Before you do any type of dress shopping you need to set a budget. Decide on a place for the reception and ceremony. There are more important things that need to be addressed first.

    Check out Priscilla of Boston PL 276.  It has everything a formal cinderella dress has only it's knee length.  Perfect for a beach wedding.  Mine should arrive in three weeks, can't wait to try it on again!Laughing
