Wedding Party

vent...ish

I have to share because today is so slow I could tear my eyes out:

So after a week of vague guilt tripping from my mom over how she and her husband didn't have plans for Easter dinner, I invited them to my place.

Two days later, I now have 8 people to feed for Easter. Eight. Started with 4, (mom, stepdad, me, fiance), now looking at 8, possibly 9. And yes, to confirm your suspicion, fi and I invited only my mom and stepdad.

If you give a mouse a freaking cookie it goes and invites my brother, his wife, my stepsister and my nephew. While I'm totally pleased to have my family around on Easter, I ... a) have no idea how I'm going to make enough food for all these people without driving myself crazy and b) have no idea where the eff to put them in my teeny apartment.

Looks like we might have Easter dinner on the lawn...

  • If you make really gross food, they will never EVER ask you to do it again.  This could be your one and only everyone's invited dinner.

  • Hahaha, eating in shifts...now if that isn't the true family spirit of Easter, I don't know what is. I'm sorry your party got taken over. I would just ask everyone to bring something to cut out the cooking problem and ask that they keep it picnic appropriate since it looks like you'll be eating on a blanket outside :)
  • CA2-It's too late for that. They know I can cook from previous BBQ encounters. I'm totally busted. Damn this uncanny ability to follow a recipe!

They're all coming in from out of town...maybe we could just do a drive up window at the apartment and save them the trouble of dressing for a picnic...

  • 9 ppl isn't toooo many, get a 7 or so pound ham.  Then boil some potatoes, make potatoes & gravy.  get a preshred coleslaw in the bag and just make the dressing- vinegar, sugar & mayo to taste.  Heat up some veggies- green beans, corn.  Buy rolls already baked and warm them.

If you were closer I would offer you a Tastefully Simple cheesecake, but maybe you can find someone in your area who sells it.  All you have to do is mix cream cheese and cool whip in a graham cracker pie shell.  Otherwise make a pie or 2 ahead of time and the rest should be pretty easy day of.  and you can't forget deviled eggs :)

    Good luck!

  • That sucks, licia. I would be stressed too. We only have enough dishes for 6 people, because that's all we could possibly fit here (with 2 eating on the coffee table), so I can relate!

A picnic actually sounds like a good idea. Ham is ok cold, and if the weather is going to be nice, there is no reason not to. Tell them all to bring a lawn chair.

  • mmm cheesecake, I'm totally drooling on my desk now. And ham, oh yes, there will be ham, but not without scandal. My SIL doesn't like ham and told my mom to let me know, but she won't let me make her a piece of chicken, burger, etc. so she'll have a main meat to eat. Why do you biitch about not liking ham and then won't take the alternative?

If the weather is good, I'm totally going to push them outside. My nephew is 5, I'm sure he can keep everyone busy. Maybe I'll hide some eggs out there to keep them all busy, ha ha ha.

  • That reminds me of when my little sister was younger. We used to hide way too many eggs to fit in her basket, so when her basket got full and she was still hunting, the eggs would fall out of her basket. She could go on for hours re-hunting the eggs that fell out, because she didn't realize what was happening. Very amusing! We do that same thing to the neices and nephews now.

  • I love Easter with kids!  2 years ago I was dating a guy who had kids.  their mother had passed away 2 years prior and since then they had not had much from just their dad, I spoiled them with cute baskets full of stuff and fun eggs.  He and I hid the eggs in the yard that morning, and they went out to find them.

I said something to his daughter about the Easter Bunny (she was 6 at the time) and she said "There is no Easter Bunny!"  I said "sure there is!" she then replied "Nuh uh, my mom told me it's something adults do for kids" and then said something about Jesus.  I felt bad knowing that when she was 4, or younger, her mom told her that and she could not experience the fun of Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy- etc.  I know for some the religious aspect is important, and I can agree to teaching children about that, but let them in on the fun too.

My parents used to hide our colored eggs.  I remember there was one year they couldn't remember where one was.  We finally found it... about 3 weeks later- euw!
