I always wonder what size the parents are when these things happen.

You never know, Nico. My mom was a tiny thing when not pregnant - 5 feet tall and all of a size 6 - and they scheduled her last c/s two weeks early because my brother was already 8.5 pounds.

I was big and only got bigger, but I had an average-sized kid.

Right, my mom is 5'6" and weighed 130# while pregnant with me.  Dad is 6'2" and weighed 170# at the time.  I was 9 lb. + and 22 inches long.
I am tall and xH is broad/fat, so I didn't anticipate having a 5 lb. baby - DD was 8 lb. + and long.
But if both of these people were short, thin things, I wouldn't anticipate their kid being 16 lb. without there being some medical "defect" going on.  If they were both tall and filled out or heavier, a baby that size would be more logical to me.
It'd be like if Taw had a baby that was 15" long.  I would what.the.what all over that stat.

Wait, how long are they when they're born? I don't remember this stuff.

True, my dad's 6'1", and he's the smallest in the family, so I guess my bro shouldn't have been unexpected. It's just the rest of us were in the middle of the pack.

Also, anecdotes are totally data. :D

Big shock, but my MIL has trouble with this concept. A is completely average sized, but because she's 4'10", and had babies that were tiny throughout infancy and toddlerhood, she finds him enormous. He was relatively small when he was born, 6lbs 9oz, but he's 50 and 60th percentile.

I've told her that I'm 5'9" and H is 5'11" -- why would you expect us to have a tiny kid?

Huh. I never really associated parent size with baby size. My mom probably weighed no more than 130 when she had me, and I was nearly 9 lbs at birth.

Often with babies this size the Mom has uncontrolled gestational diabetes (that's why the babies will be at risk for high blood sugar, like it said towards the end of the article). More common with people who are overweight but not necessarily.

This is exactly what I was thinking although I had the great fortune to marry into a family that gives birth to ginormous babies.  DH and all of his sibs were in the high 9 pound range, my FIL was 13 pounds (79 years ago), and my DH was just ever so slightly under 10 pounds.  That was after they told me I missed the window for the epidural.

I didn't read the link but saw something on this earlier.  I am having a hard time thinking that  the mom was overdue.  Dear God and I thought DH was bad.
