Storing a Champagne/Ivory Colored Wedding Dress

Hello, all! So I've brought my wedding dress home from the salon and have about a year to go until alterations appts. and 14 months until the actual wedding. The consultant told me to wrap the dress in a sheet before placing it back in the garment bag. I didn't know why so I did some research when I got home and most other brides insisted on using a pristine white sheet. I may be totally stupid here but I didn't know if the sheet needs to be white because the dress is white or if it's so no other color will bleed onto the dress. Since my dress isn't white, should the sheet match the color of my champagne dress or should it be a white sheet no matter what? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Honestly, I've had my dress just in it's garment bag hanging for over two years and it still looks like the day I got it.  Using a white cotton sheet is supposed to let it breathe and keep it from yellowing.  Yes, you should use a white sheet as you don't want another color to rub off on your dress (white will be just fine for your dress).  If your dress has a lot of beading or is really heavy then I suggest laying it under your bed instead of hanging so it doesn't stretch out (that is if you don't have any pets that could get to it).

  • That's very helpful, thank you.
  • If a sheet is bleeding onto your wedding dress, you've got one messed up sheet there!

Seriously, I stored my white gown wrapped in a yellow sheet. It was still snowy white after 10 months of storage.
  • Well nobody told me this when I bought my gown, and it's been in the closet for a year. I hope it's okay Frown
  • That's good to know because I'd rather not go shopping for a new sheet, or at least not be in a rush to do so; I currently have a beige sheet doing the job. @Kris, I've read posts by former brides saying that they also knew nothing of the sheet trick and their dresses were still fine. It's supposed to prevent yellowing of the dress but if you're checking on your dress every now and then and you're happy with the color, then that's what matters.
  • Wow, 35 years, that is impressive! My friend actually just gave me this same advice in person today so definitely sounds like a good option.
