Spanx - need advice

Is in unreasonable to wear Spanx under your dress for just the pictures and the ceremony and then take them off when you get to the reception? My mom says I should leave them on all night - but I find them to be uncomfortable and annoying when you have to go to the bathroom also, even though you can buy ones with a hole (which I actually find disgusting) I have just a tiny bit of a tummy pooch I want to hide because I have a pretty form fitting dress. What do you suggest? Is there alternatives to the super tight Spanx shorts style? Do they make such a thing that would just go around your mid section?

  • You could try an old fashioned waist cincher, but those aren't particularly comfortable either.   Spanx has a lot of different styles other than the mid thigh shorts styles.  Check out their website. They have one that is a little skirt and just high waisted panties.

  • I guess I have another question related to this then... does anyone else feel sick to there stomach ever when they wear spanx for several hours? It just doesn't seem like you should feel like you have a stomach ache just from wearing an article of clothing. I want to be comfortable on my wedding day, not feel like something is squeezing me so tight it's making me sick.

  • You might be wearing a size or two too small.  You shouldn't be getting sick wearing spanx.  Sometimes I feel like a sausage for a while, but even that goes away after they loosen up a little bit.  Are you sure you are sizing them correctly?

I thought I was. I'm a size 12 so I bought the size Large based on my height and weight. If I go up the size it doesn't seem to do anything for "shaping". Maybe I'm just a wimp.

  • Maybe it makes a difference they were the "Assets" line of Spanx that Target carries??

  • Buy the XL.  I'm a 10 and I buy the L even if it says I should buy the M.  I never get sick in my Assets...because really, they're made by the same company, just a lot cheaper.

  • the assets brand doesn't have as much elasticity... they are made by the same company, but they are just a cheaper version (in price and quality), but still fine.  The Spanx brand has a little more "tug here and pull there" in my opinion than Assets does.  Sort of like Lexus and Toyota.  Both made by the same company and both perfectly fine cars, just lexus is the luxury version of toyota.  Spanx is the luxury version of assets.

I would try the larger size in the spanx brand and see what happens.

It's cast syndrome. Try a larger size although that also defeats the purpose of the spanx.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... which was why I just wanted to take them off after we were done with pictures and ceremony. I don't see a problem with doing it and it's not like I have a big gut I'm trying to hide... I don't think it will be a big deal to slip into the bathroom for a few minutes and take them off and be comfortable the rest of the night while we're dancing. And... if I actually remember to eat dinner or have a chance to eat some of our yummy cake we ordered I'd like to be able to not feel like I'm going to barf.

  • Have you tried the Assets to see if you get the shaping you want?  If I'm primarily looking for shaping/smoothing I'll wear my Assets but if I need a lot of "suck me in here and pull me in there," I wear Spanx.

Try the Assets and then if that doesn't work- get a larger pair of Spanx and see what you like best. :)  Good luck hon- but IMVHO, Your wedding day is the LAST day you want to feel sick, so if you don't like the Assets or the large pair of Spanx.... take 'em off after!  Everyone will think you're stunning anyway!
  • I just made the decision to not wear them at all. I personally didn't feel like I needed them at all until my mom said I should wear them at my last fitting. She made me feel self conscious about myself which I kind of resent her for now. I felt confident in it when I tried it on the first time and I still do. I want to be comfortable and I'm just going to not wear it! This picture is from when I first bought the dress and I've since lost a few pounds even! I think I look amazing in it!

  • You look amazing in your dress... and IMO, you look great without the SPANX. I know they are super popular... but in my opinion, they flatten me out too much. Like, I am VERY pear shaped. They kind of make my waistline look less defined, and I hate the way they look.

    Anyway, you look gorgeous!

  • You look awesome!!! I feel sick from tummy suckers too but normally not until I've been wearing them for a while. ...so I think your first idea was the best - wear them for your pictures and then take them off and party! Toss 'em in the trash the first time you go to the bathroom!!
  • I have a simliar shape dress and about your size.  I thought I looked great in it and then thought too much about it, started thinking about how I have a little pooch and ended up buying some waist cinchers that kind of look like a corset so they are prettier then the spanx.  They are not needed but thought they would suck in the little bit of stomach I have.  Still not sure if I'm going to wear them or not.

You look great!  You don't need it but sometimes it is just that piece of mind so you feel better in your pictures.  Rock your curves - your honey is marrying you because you are you - you don't need to change anything.  :)
  • I use a brand of girdle called Flexies and I bought them at JCP. They are very comfy. i can wear them all day under my thin pants. I bought the kind that reduces the look of cellulite if you wear them several days in a row. I am going to wear them under my dress because I do have a belly to hide. I'm middle aged and a size 12 too but am wearing a 14 wedding dress.
    Good luck.

  • Personally, I like having the spanx because it's like wearing shorts under your dress! I buy a size bigger than I should because I'm really not going for the "look" of the smoothing garment but being a bigger girl (although down 30lbs since Feb 25th) I hate when my legs rub together in a dress and I will practically be limping at the end of the night so wearing the shorts type of spanx is great under a dress! Yes, they are annoying for going to the bathroom (the hole grosses me out too!) but my dress is strapless with no train and I can easily undress and redress myself. My plan is to take my dress off to use the bathroom so it will be easier. My skirt is many many layers of tulle, not easy to sit in or maneuver but it looks awesome!

  • Ladies,
Be yourselves on your wedding day! Be comfortable!

I too thought about wearing spanx on my day. I even thought about wearing a corset to improve my shape and then I thought better of it. Comfortable and confident will look so much better in photos and in person vs. nauseated and squeezed

I want to be me: relaxed, comfortable, feeling well is at my best
