Questions you've been asked in an interview

About a month ago I posted a question asking for opinions on my cover letter for an articling job I was applying for that I really wanted. The responses I got were awesome, and I ended up getting an interview with the firm!

Anyway, my interview is tomorrow and I'm in the middle of prepping for the interview. I have gone over the basic questions they will ask, but I'm wondering if I can get some ideas from other ladies out there on questions they've been asked before... kind of like, "if you could be any tree, what tree would you be?" lol

  • Yes, in today's competitive market, a lot of the questions are psychological and/or behaviorally based. They can also be a combo of one person or a panel of interviewers.

One technique that my college advisor recommended to me was the STAR technique:

    S - situation
    T - task
    A - action
    R - result

So for example, if they asked you a question like "describe a time when you accomplished something a former job required you to do." I don't think this is the exact wording, but hopefully you get the point. The STAR technique allows you to be thorogh but still stay on topic. I know I have a lot of resources buried, but this was just something that I thought about after reading your post. Get a good nights rest and good luck!
  • Some questions:
Where do you see yourself five years from now? (of course I answered: working at a stable job and staying with the same company).
Why did you leave your last job?
Tell me about a difficult client you worked with and how you handled the situation (i'm in social work).
Someone randomly asked me what was the last book I read.

Generally, interviewers want to see that you are serious about the job and looking for stable employment; they don't want to hire someone who is looking to stay with the company for just a short amount of time. Don't say anything negative about any of your prior employers/ co-workers either. I'm sure you know all this but i'm just offering some extra advice.
    Good luck!

  • If you're dealing with a hiring committee be sure to ask them if they know anything about the job beyond the job description and how this position will effect theirs.

  • Definitely use the person's name during your interview, and be yourself!  They hire your personality over experience alot of the time.  Focus on your assets and how well you would fit in to the company and why they need you.  (this might require you to do some research on the company)...ive been asked how much i know about the company iwas applying for.  :) good luck!  know youll do great!
