Dress is in!...but..way too big

Does anyone know anything about alerations? They say that it is easier to take in...but i am worried that it will cost me hundreds! How many sizes can they actually take in? Thanks!

  • 2-3 sizes is typically fine, and more than that and there could be some issues depending on the dress.

and alterations probably will cost you hundreds lol welcome to anything labeled "wedding"
  • Thank you! I think I only will need 1-2 sizes...so that is great to hear! (Well not the hundreds part) I have just heard horror stories about stores charging the same amount for alterations as the bride paid for the dress. We shall see!

  • It's not necessarily just how much they have to taken in but also how intricate the dress is.  Do you have lots of beading and/or lace?  If so, that will increase your cost very quickly.
  • No beading...no lace. The entire dress is silk organza. The dress is very ruffled/flowy at the bottom. Fantastic!

  • If you know of a good seamstress that is local, you might be better off going to her.  Stores that do that, order a dress in they know won't be the right size but will require lots and lots of alterations, really make me mad.  I wouldn't let them do the alterations on principle.  Yell

  • It's probably better to go with an outside seamstress. Your local board might have recommendations.  I found doing that was a lot cheaper than using the store's (David's Bridal in this case) alteration services.

AIso, I have used a local dry cleaners to take in and hem a formal dress and they did a good job.
  • Where did you buy your dress that was so big on you?

I completely agree with this.  The bridal stores in my area want an arm and a leg and your first born child to alter a dress.
