Chargers

So, chargers are the big plate-thing under the serving plates, right?

Are you using chargers? Or not?

I just attended a wedding, and now as an engaged woman, I paid a LOT of attention to all the details and noticed that I really did like the look of the chargers. But they took them off the tables after the main course. Is that a typical time to remove them?  Would it be strange to keep a charger on the table until the end?

Re: Chargers

  • They took ours off before dinner which I thought was strange but because they were the venue's I guess they get to what they want with their items (would have been different if it was ours).  I really like the look of chargers however if they weren't free I would not have got any.

  • I think that is fairly standard that they are removed after the main course. If the bride were supplying the chargers (either via rental or purchase), I assume they could be kept on the tables, but then I suspect the guests would move them out of the way to have the area in front of them empty for desserts and glasses, etc.

FYI: in case you want to know, based on my years on the Knot, the cheapest chargers for purchase are about $1 each, same with rentals if not supplied for free by the venue.
  • I really debated as to whether to rent chargers or not.  In the end, I just used the 12 that I own personally for our head table.  They looked gorgeous and I kicked myself for not shelling out the $100 it would have cost to do them on all the tables (like the PP said, I had found them to rent for $1 each).

IMO, chargers are one of those things that are nice if you have the budget for them and if not, NBD.  If your venue provides them, I would definitely use them.
  • Charges are a nice touch that help make the tables look "full" when guests first sit down. Unless you have requested a pre-plated salad or soup course there will be nothing in the center of each place setting without the charger.

Most typically charger plates are removed after the salad course or entree. Rarely are they left for dessert mainly because the size of the dessert plate typically looks ackward on the charger. When choosing your charger make sure you know the size of the salad and entree plates your caterer will use so you can plan accordingly.

Money Saving Tip: Depending on the size of plates your caterer is using you may be able to rent a larger dinner plate in a complimentary pattern to serve as the charger. These typically will rent for less than a traditional charger.

Best of luck with your planning.

  • We used silver chargers because we thought it would look funny and sort of un-set to not have them. We placed our menu cards on the chargers and then they were used throughout the meal. Without the chargers, each place setting would have been empty, which we didn't like. Of course, they are not a necessity if you want to save on costs.
