As someone who has IBS, I can confirm that stressful situations make IBS a thousand times worse. If things are going great in my life, I won't have any symptoms for months. The minute things get stressful though, everything tenses up and I start having problems.
From my experience, people who have IBS react to stress with uncontrollable muscle spasms in the intestine, which can cause a variety of problems. The body then self corrects, and usually what happens is that the entire system flushes out in order to start over again. (Sorry if it's TMI-- but I thought I'd explain for anyone who doesn't know what IBS does.)
IBS sucks, but you learn to deal with it. If I was in the poster's position though, I'd probably do the same thing.

You would stay in an abusive marriage? That's sad.
Wouldn't the stress of an abusive marriage kind of equal the stress of leaving? I have no idea, but you'd think that eventually, leaving would result in less stress and therefore less IBS symptoms. I get that logic isn't always easily grasped in these situations, though.
In my situation, I've got a lot of other serious health problems that trigger when I have IBS symptoms. If I'm in the same situation for long enough, my symptoms subside, and I'm healthy again. Leaving would be alot more stressful for me, and overall I'd end up worse off. Having never been in an abusive relationship, though, I don't really know how things could go in that perspective; I'm probably being a little naive, but I guess that comes from the fact that I couldn't ever imagine my FI becoming abusive.

Make a note. It probably won't happen again any time soon :)
Leaving isn't just about the IBS, and having never been in that situation I can't know, but it seems that while from the outside leaving seems easier and like a good idea, a person who has been abused is often so scared and so on it doesn't happen or seem possible. Anyway, I try not to judge people for not getting out of situations that I've never been in and don't know how hard it would be to get out of. I do know the most dangerous time to be an abused women is right after you leave.

I thought maybe her husband had it and she was putting up with it because she's too scared to leave him.
You guys make way more sense.
