Church Drama Continues

Today we met with the priest (not the one who was rude to me) who will be doing our ceremony. He mentioned that there is a $200 donation. I explained that the wedding planner already told us that the fee will be $700 ($300 for her, $250 for the violinist and $150 for the organist). He was suprised by these fees and said he wasn't aware of them. He knows my parents real well and understands that I am a member of the church but said there isn't anything he can do because the fees are set by the pastor (aka- the mean priest who was rude to me).

I cannot believe that we are now up to $900 for the ceremony. Oh and what makes me really mad is that my friend only paid $50 at the same church because they are friendly with the wedding planner and she dropped her fee. Also the groom was in the church band and they played. So they only gave a $50 donation!

Thanks for letting me vent. I'm really upset right now.

Re: Church Drama Continues

  • UMMMM.... I would contact your dioceese, because I don't think they are allowed to charger for a planner... The fees are supposed to be consistent from parish to parish...at least that is what I understood. I would let them know, the priest that isn't officiating, that you might consider switching parished over this...
  • Oh... and the music is pretty much standard price, especially for good people. I am not looking at that as part of what I am paying to the church, because that goes directly to the musicians. I am sorry that this is cr@ppy.
  • WOW!

If it wasn't so close to the wedding, I would tell you to consider a different church.  Maybe discuss this with your wedding planner.  Let her know
    A) she needs to tell couples this prior to the wedding date being set there

    B) that the fees are getting a little out of hand.  Maybe if you could give your time or something else instead of the money?

I am sorry sweetie that you have to go through this!
  • Thanks Alyssa and Jen. I appreciate your help. Alyssa, I should call the diosese; you're right! Jen, at this point it is too late to change our church but if it wasn't I would for sure!

I'm going to say that we got the only free church in our area and most others run 1000-2500+(not including music), even if you are a member. It is crazy here, some even make you pay for a coordinator. (The most popular and expensive doesn't have a bathroom for guests to use!) As I visit the knot I find that our area if a lot dofferent from other areas of the country though.
