Amazon Registry

I'm thinking of doing an Amazon Registry. For those of you who've done one, what did you like/dislike about it and what items did you register for?

    Pros:
    • variety, obviously
    • prices are better than in department stores
    • free shipping on a lot of items
We found several of the All-Clad pans we wanted for less than they are listed at Williams-Sonoma.
The Kitchen-Aid was cheaper and had a stronger motor than comparably-priced models from department stores.
We also registered for a vacuum via Amazon.

I think returns could be a pain since you'd have to ship, whereas with most other stores you can return it in-store.
  • I agree that returns can be a pain.  Reviews seem to be good for people that had to return broken items, since that's free to return, but we got a duplicate cookbook and ended up regifting one of them, since by the time we paid for shipping we wouldn't have gotten very much back.

We registered at BBB, Amazon, and Macy's.  Our Amazon registry included:
    cookbooks
    bike pump
    some tools
cookie sheets and a few other specific baking and cooking items
a few things from REI, William Sonoma and a Judaica store using the universal registry feature
  • How does the universal registry work?  I found several things at Williams-Sonoma and Crate & Barrel I liked but I don't really want to have to go create registries there.  I *heard* that if you register through the universal registry, people have the option of purchasing through the store, the store's website, or Amazon. True?

  • The universal registry button works well. You just have to download it off their site (it adds to the right of your URL). When you find an item you like you just click the universal registry button and it adds it to your registry.

We are using Amazon. I buy everything off of there so it made sense to me.

  • I'm using Amazon and have several items on the universal registry.  The universal registry items just say "shop this store" and it takes you to the item's website while keeping track of what gets bought.  All the amazon items link to the amazon listing and have a "shopping elsewhere?" button in case people find the same item at a local store.

    my opinion:

    PROS-
    large variety.
    one single registry
    potentially cheaper prices
    free shipping on many items
most people are familiar with amazon and have accounts set up
thank you list built in so you can see who buys what

    CONS -
not good for your elders/not online savvy people
you may have to explain that yes, there are BBB items on the Amazon registry but you DONT have a BBB registry
returns might be complicated (i havent had to return anything yet)

with all registries, you should periodically check on the 'in stock' status of your items.  the only real problem i had was the towels from BBB that I added with the universal registry button.  about 6 months later, some of them weren't available anymore (discontinued) and i wouldnt have known if i didnt check every few weeks.  most of Amazon's items will indicate stock right on the registry. =)

as far as what we registered for -- everything and anything! we even put gift cards to stores and restaurants on there with the universal button.
