Naked Registry

Ok, so my FI and I have been looking for a home for a while now, in the meantime we have been purchasing a lot of the things we will need. I wasn't planning on getting engaged for a while. It was actually my last thought. I was completely surprised when my FI popped the question....So now our thing is, we have nothing to register for...we pretty much have everything we will need, so our registry is pretty baron. We don't want to register for things just to have it on the list if we really don't need it. Do you think this may annoy people?

Do you think this may annoy people?

Yes, some people get very upset when there is no registry.  Though it really depends on your circle.  I have even heard of people saying it's rude not to have a registry, which is nonsense.

ETA:  Sorry, I didn't read very carefully.  I believe you meant your registry was barren.  But yes, this may still annoy people, particularly if it gets bought out.

  • We've had our home for a little over a year now.  We don't really need anything, but put things like an extra bedding set, and odds and ends that we would like but just aren't a priority right now.  I added picture frames that I would want once I have wedding photos, a couple of small kitchen appliances, etc.  Our registry is small, but there are some people who enjoy bringing a gift more than cash.
  • Some people will probably be annoyed, but if getting something off of your registry is so important they should have done it sooner before stuff was all bought!  Perhaps consider adding some of the things that need to be replaced in a few years like towels and sheets (and get the really nice ones).

  • What about some higher end things or things you need to replace?  There are also decor items that can be registered for.

  • I ran into the same problem. I have a fully stocked/functional apt and after we get married my husband is planning to move in with me. I wasn't sure what we were going to register for but when we went to pick things out we ended up registering for an upgrade of the things I already had. We plan to either give the stuff away that i have now or maybe hold a yard sale (since giving away a boatload of brand new things is sometimes a shame). We registered for high quality things that I wouldn't normally splurge on... (keeping in mind that you need a good variety of prices on your registry).
  • You might get a lot of white elephant gifts.  Look at Brie's sticky note at the top of the page for ideas on out of the box registry items.
  • I have everything too and already own a home.  I registered for nicer stuff than I had but I too had a difficult time finding things I needed.  I registered at Target where I shop for groceries so if I want, I might just return stuff for gift cards and then use it on my groceries for a year or whatever.  That's sort of like getting cash.  But, I might not do that but it's nice to have the option.

</div><div>I think that is so unethical.  You shouldn't register for something with the intent of returning it for cash.  I think when your registry gets low people will get the hint that there isn't anything else you want so they should just give you cash or a gift card.</div>

If she did it, she'd be stuck with the gifts anyhow.  Target has an awful return policy and you can only return a couple things per year, probably thanks to people doing things like that.
  • we have our own house too and thought we didnt need anything. but we went to bed bath and beyond and actually found things we could use. like a shampoo carpet cleaner, a pressure washer (to clean the outside of house, cars, etc), a nice vaccume, storage items, a new grill, some new furniture/lamps (even tho we already have this-it'll be nice to change the decor)., china protectors, outdoor furniture, camping stuff like table/hammock.etc.or shelves for the garage.think out of the box, things you may need in the future. :)

oh, i forgot, my friend didnt have a regisrty, because she wanted money.
She ended up getting gifts, everything she got she actually threw away or gave it away!  i thought this was very ungrateful, but if she actually had a registry of just some things, maybe she would have used the items instead of throwing em away. although i kinda doubt it w/ her.
  • I'm new here, just popped in to see what you all were saying about this subject as I am getting married in 3 months and need to think about a registery.

When I go to a wedding I love giving the couple a place setting of fine china the couple picked and put in the registery.
  • i think some ppl will be annoyed no matter what u do. so register for some things that you want instead of need. there are always great things that you can have extra of like bedding, towles, rugs etc.
  • If you are looking for a house maybe register at Home Depot or a furniture store?
