Hyphenating your last name? (XP)

Does anyone hyphenate anymore? I'm thinking of using Jane Smith-Doe rather than Jane Smith Doe. I also want to keep my middle name, so Jane Marie Smith-Doe.

Is hyphenating old-fashioned?

  • I'm not hyphenating, I'm just taking FI's last name. But I don't think hyphenating is old fashioned either.

  • I am taking FI last name, but my daughters will start hypenating their last name to avoid any confussion

  • I only know of 2 people who hyphenate their last name. I don't think it's old fashioned but i wouldn;t do it. Mostly because I hate my maiden name but also because I wat my husbands last name.
  • I don't think it's old fashioned. It seems pretty common in my area. I don't think our names sound good hyphenated so I'm planning to add my maiden name as a second middle name. I can't bear to lose my last name completely and FI would be disappointed if I didn't take his last name.
  • It is old-fashioned, but I think it's pretty cool.  I'm not taking my husband's last name at all, but if I did, I would hyphenate.

One really good reason to hyphenate is that it greatly improves your chances of keeping your own 1/2 of the name.  Every woman I've ever known that tried to use two last names without a hyphen just ended up dropping her own last name, because people didn't recognize it as a last name.  The hyphen makes it clear.
  • I think it's a pretty personal choice and whther or not it's "old fashioned" I'm not really sure.

I'm taking FI's name, plain and simple.

  • I'm just keeping my name.

The thing that I don't like about hyphens is that one part of the name always seems to end up getting dropped.  Plus, I really don't want to legally change my name.  Legally, professionally, and sometimes socially I'll be using my last name.  In certain social situations I'll just use his name.  Future children will have his last name.

  • i am giving away my last name anyone want it??? lol i am tired of having the last name Smith lol seriously i think hypenating is old fashion and usually one name ends up getting dropped anyway! but if you wanna do it then do it! its your choice! go with what works for you!
  • I don't think that it is old fashioned.  As others said though my ladies who do end up only using one.  That's what my step mom ended up doing.

  • It's a personal choice.  For my 1st marriage, I took his name and then changed back to my maiden name after our divorce.  For this marriage, FI and I have the same last name (we're not related, just in case you were wondering) and the only thing I'm changing to is the "Mrs."

Thats pretty cool!!!  Same last name this time around!!!!!  For my 1st marriage I hyphenated...but for me it was more of a "I know this isn't right and I don't want to give up my identity" thing...I'm taking FI last name this time because I know its right and I want to....its amazing the differences in the way we feel about a 2nd marriage.. :)

  • I'm keeping my name.  I agree with the idea that if you try to use both last names without a hypen it ends up turning more into a second middle name.  I would say the only hassle with a hypen is that you must always use it on legal documents.

Additionally, NPR just recently talked about hypens.  It was a very interesting story.  It may be worth a listen for you?
  • I don't see hyphenating as old fashioned, but I wouldn't do it. Mainly, I wouldn't because my last name is 7 letters and his is 9...I feel like 16 total is too much plus my 7 letter first name and my middle initial, which I consistently use. I sign my name several times each shift I work, so I don't want to write a really long name! I'm not in live with FI's last name it's very Jewish and we are raising our family Catholic but it means a lot to him that I am taking it.
