registry question..

My FI's grandparents and family (maybe 10-15 people total) have graciously offered to purchase some items for FI and I off of our registry. They mentioned this to my future SIL and told her to guide us to register for a new bedroom set and a nice sofa.

Since they live in Canada, it's easier for them to purchase these items online and have the items shipped/delivered to our home.

My question is - I guess I don't know what to register for. I don't know what an appriopriate amount would be or what they're looking to spend?  I asked SIL what she thought and she said "oh, just get what you like! they will figure it out"  what is a "normal" amount for a bedroom set and a sofa?

i just don't want to seem greedy/excessive in registering for something that's too expensive and having them think that we're being all gift grabby

Re: registry question..

  • I don't think there is a "norm" for that kind of stuff as it varies A LOT based on materials, size, etc.  An Ikea bedroom set and one made out of study/quality wood are going to be drastically different in price.  I agree to pick what you like...typically a bedroom set is something you have for a long time.  If it is too pricey for them each to buy a sepearate piece, they will probably pool together to buy one of two pieces.  And that is one or two pieces less than you have to buy on your own!!!

As courteous as it is for you to not want them to spend a ton of money, registering for things that are more reasonably priced that you don't love isn't worth it when it comes to something as long-term as bedroom furniture and a sofa.
  • Totally agree with PP.  My rule of thumb would be not to register for anything that costs more than you could justify paying for the item, were you to be the one buying it.  Even if you don't have the money now, could you see yourself purchasing top of the line furniture in the future?  If not, I wouldn't register for it (though it doesn't sound like you're going that direction).

Not sure what furniture stores you have in your area, but I'd probably go with something middle of the line - they obviously want to buy you something nice, otherwise they could have just got you a toaster, KWIM?
  • I would suggest getting something tht will last you awhile maybe from Macy's? Nothing outragous but they obviously want to get you something nice.

Couches at macy's, decent ones, are around 1500-1700

Bed sets... depends on what you get... http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/tahoe-noir-bedroom-furniture-collection?ID=481539&CategoryID=35420#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D410%26ruleId%3D53%26slotId%3Drec%284%29

  • thanks guys. We are registered at PB, so I was thinking of just doing seperate pieces there. They seem to get fairly good reviews and are made of quality materials, and we're leaning towards the reasonsbly priced ones.   I guess if they're too expensive, they can always purchase other items. I compared their prices to the ones at other stores (like Penny's) and they're just a tad more expensive. We'll see. I'm going to keep looking.

  • We just got the PB Comfort Sofa with removable slipcovers (cotton twill).

    AMAZING.

Between our dog, having friends over, and just being active people who someday want kids, knowing that we can take the whole slipcover off and wash it or even buy a new one if our decorating scheme changes is just fantastic.

It's fairly priced and long enough for my 6'2 FI to take a nap on (yes, this was furniture criteria).  Plus, it's made in the USA.

  • thanks em! that's what we're looking at. my FI is big into things being made in the US, so that's good to know. Plus, with a dog, cat, a 3.5 yr old, and a dirty mechanic H,  removable slipcovers sound like a good plan :)
