Wedding Invitations & Paper

Where to have invitations printed (we already have the actual invites, but they're blank right now)

Hi everyone,

We already have our invitations purchased and sitting in their boxes in a closet, but we still need to print them. I'm thinking Kinkos, but am wondering has anyone done the DIY invitations and had them printed somewhere?

If so how much was the printing? (We're printing abut 75 invitations)

Did they have choice of inks (colors, fonts, etc.)?

How did you show them what you wanted printed? Did you bring in a sample, just save the template online, etc.?

Re: Where to have invitations printed (we already have the actual invites, but they're blank right now)

  • Hi there!

It can actually be pretty easy to print invites yourself on your home printer, and using the photo or "best" paper setting, the results will be as nice as kinkos or any other printer and you'll have more font options.

    Here are my suggestions:

    1. In Word or another word processing program, set the document size to the same as your invitation (like 5"x7" for example) and set the orientation the same way. Add margins to your invite to make up for the decoration (for instance if you have a floral motif on the bottom that takes up 3 inches of space)

    2. Look around a free font site like www.dafont.com for pretty and unusual fonts for your invite - don't just use Times Roman, Comic Sans or Papyrus.

    3. Type out your wording and center it for the most traditional look, or left or right justify it for a more contemporary look

    4. Under print settings create a custom paper size for your document (like 5x7). Put the settings on "Photo Paper Matte" or "best print" and if your cards are thick, choose "thick paper" if you have that option.

    5. Cut out 5x7 test sheets from regular printer to try out your invite on those, holding them up to the light with your invitation behind it to check for placement. When that's all set...

    6. Print your invites!!!

Otherwise you'll probably be looking at something like $1 per invite to print at Kinkos.

I worked at a stationery shop for several years and this is how we printed up "imprintables" like the ones you're describing - now I have my own invitation biz

  • Thank you so much Ruth. I was afraid that it would look too DIY if Printed them myself, but with your suggestions I think we can probably do it. We've got 3 printers between the two of us so we should be able to find one of them that can do the job. Thanks so much I'm going to look into that. Laughing

  • No problem! The only tricky part is sometimes getting the orientation lined up correctly, but with some trial and error (with the scrap paper!) it should come out looking great

here's some additional helpful info on custom print settings

  • I would definitely print them at home if at all possible.

Just a FYI - I used to work at FedEx Kinko's and they will not print on anything smaller than 8 1/2 x 11. I am assuming your invites are a lot smaller than that. Unless of course, you had them formatted and they were able to be cut down. But that doesn't seem the case with your invites.
  • I had ours printed at my college.

  • Not sure what brand invites you got, but we got Wilton ones. If you go to their website you can enter in the product number and they have templates where you can type in your wording and see it right there on the invite before printing, and print right from there. They have like 10 fonts to choose from. Good luck!
