In Response to Re: Sarah Palin's son got married but their reception : Out of curiousity, do you feel the same way about every person that has a position of authority or public image? Like, if Obama's daughter (yes, I know they are way too young, but it's a hypothetical) got knocked up out of wedlock while he was president, would you feel the same way? That he should step down so that he could put his children first? What about the Hollywood actors and actresses that have kids with drug problems or pregnancies? Should they stop making movies/singing/ bringing in money for their families because their kids made stupid choices? I mean, there are a lot of reasons to dislike Sarah Palin, but this sounds like a dumb one to me.
    Posted by HappinessByTheKilowatt
I actually don't like the way the Obamas have put their children in the limelight already. I think there's a difference between being like the Bushes, who didn't throw their children in the media (I mean, people knew who they were, but they weren't putting them on the cover of US weekly during campaigns) than being like Palin and the Obamas.

However, no, I think as he's already president, he shouldn't have to completely change his life because his child got pregnant. I do think she shouldn't have run though because if she didn't know the kid was KU when she made the decision (which I find unlikely) then she found out soon enough after...

I'm very harsh on parents who put themselves first. I feel that when you have a child, you have to start thinking about the child and your decisions. I know I'm harder than most people on this one...but I can't help it, it's how I feel.

I also judge DH's coworkers (he's a Marine) who are single parents and picked this life. They all had good jobs before, but they're putting their kids through hell, because this is what they--the parents--want. Again, I fully recognize it's very judgy of me.
In Response to Re: Sarah Palin's son got married but their reception : So anyone who lets their kid do 16& pregnant is a bad parent? Going through that experience is probably much more damaging. I don't think that by her running, she wasn't putting her kids first. IMO, If I had a child who was pregnant, I wouldn't just stop my plans in their tracks. But TBH, was it ever made public whether she knew Bristol was pregnant before she accepted the offer to run? (Not before they started making appearances, just running)

    Yes.

And Sarah Palin is a bad parent to Bristol because she let her political aspriations affect the way the pregnancy was dealt. Most parents whose children have a baby at that age don't turn around and "encourage" (ahem) them to become abstinence advocates. That's Sarah pandering to her "moral" (ahem again) base.

Also read all the conspiracy theories taht Trig is really Bristol's too. Somewhat compelling-very entertaining.
I don't think the parents of pregnant teenagers are bad parents. In no way am I comfortable with a blanket statement that big. I'm perfectly comfortable stating that the parents of pregnant teenagers who allow them to be exploited on a reality tv program due to their pregnant underage state do not have their parenting priorities in order. Your child has already come to you and said "Mom. I'm 16. I'm pregnant. That dude over there with his underwear showing...he's the dad." When she follows it up with "And Mtv wants to follow us around with cameras to show how irresponsible and unprepared we are," you don't just give up and say "Sure."

I do too, but you also have to realize that most of the pregnant teenagers shown on 16 & pregnant have SOMETHING ELSE going on in their lives. Most of them (on the show) come from broken homes, have drug/drinking problems, or are basically latch-key kids with little to no supervision. MTV is exploiting them for drama - that's why you can't base everything you know about teenage pregnancy on them.

If I were to get pregnant tomorrow, I'd get the same looks as the 16 year olds on that show (because I look relatively young, even though I'm 25) - and many of my students have multiple children before they're 21 or 22. That doesn't mean they're bad parents, and it doesn't mean that they had bad parents. The fact that they're trying to get an education and better the course of life for their children tells me that they're good parents.

I also find it interesting that the vast majority of this season's 16 & Pregnant victims are dying their hair after the show. Just sayin'.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton

I KNEW someone here had that name, and now I remember it is you. :-)

I met a little girl named Brita once and I thought it was nice. Pretty, but uncommon.

Unless you tell me that the girl was named after the water filter, I like the name Britta.

Yep they definitely are. Their kids made a mistake and they glorify that mistake and all the teens look extremely trashy on the show

I hate conspiracy theories. And Bristol was pregnant with her son when Trig was born. Also, how many teenage mothers give birth to babies with Down syndrome? And how do you know that Bristol didn't want to be an abstinence advocate? I think you're assuming a lot of things here just because you don't like Sarah Palin. There are plenty of valid reasons to dislike her politics but coming up with conspiracy theories about her kids is just silly.

  • I personally know Britta, as in did Girl Scouts with her, played soccer with her through part of High School, and went to school with her. She's a really nice girl and their family is great. I never met Track and I'm not a fan of Sarah or Bristol, but to be making such mean comments about someone you don't know anything about is pretty rude. If you need to rag on some complete stranger so you can feel better about yourself then I think I like you even less than Sarah and maybe Bristol, who coincidentally, I also played soccer with.

And, Britta is an EXTREMELY common Scandinavian name, the water filter came long after.
  • Hmm

    A reception later on?

That explains why the bride, groom, and family were in jeans but wearing corsages/boutonnieres in their pictures.

Sort of made me glad, I mean if Palin is a former governor, that sort of makes her a bit like American lesser-royalty and we can't have our version of royal weddings in JEANS.

I have no problem with Palin running despite the fact that Bristol was pregnant. Saying that she's a bad parent because she did so anyway is like saying that the Clintons are bad parents despite Bill running for president when Chelsea was going through an awkward teengage faze and was getting some nasty comments in the media. (FYI, I'm not a fan of the Clintons' at all, but I do think that they did a wonderful job raising Chelsea, who has turned out to be a beautiful woman.) Or Bush running even though his daughters weren't perfect angels. (Not only did they get a lot of flack for drinking under age, but I know that the Yale newspaper printed hate mail directed toward Barbara in their special Valentine's Day edition, in which other students sent love letters to each other.)

Judge kids for what they've done, parents for what they've done, but half the point of this country is that it shouldn't matter who your parents are, good or bad.
