I hit a deer... :'(

Today on my way to school I hit and killed a deer on the road. I was driving down the road at about 7 this morning, thinking that it was really overcast and dark today and all of a sudden I see this deer stopped 2 feet in front of me. I slammed on my breaks but it was too late and the poor deer went flying.

I was extremely shaken up, I've never hit an animal before and I feel horrible. I also have a dent in the front of my car where there's still some deer hair stuck... My parents are going to be pissed and I'm worried about how much all this is going to cost, plus I feel like a complete idiot. I called BF and woke him up and he made me feel a little bit better.

I just really want to go home and crawl under the covers. :(

Re: I hit a deer... :'(

  • With living in WI I am surprised I have never hit one (although now I am knocking on wood). Your parents have no reason to be mad, it happens all the time. At least it was a deer and not a person or another car.

Hope the rest of your day gets better.

  • I agree with Stina, at least it wasn't a person or a car!

With hunting season and it being dark out, it was prime time for them to be out, so you were outnumbered! Not your fault!

I hope the rest of the day is better and you only have 2 days until graduation!! Yay!!

I live in upstate NY where deer run rampant and in the 3 1/2 years I've been here with my car I've never hit an animal...until today. I'm moving out on Friday. What a crummy run of luck...:(

ETA: Thanks ladies, your support means alot, I really appreciate it.

  • ....I once hit a cat.  :(  I love cats.  It was awful.  I don't like to talk about it. In fact, I think I've only ever mentioned it here.

Deer-car accidents are really, really common, especially with the reduced numbers of natural predators. I'm sorry about it, but it's NOT your fault. Your parents will understand, I'm sure. If not, at least WE do.
  • Please don't blame yourself, if you could have stopped you would have. Just be thankful you didn't get hurt.

I'm guessing that I don't live too far from you and deer are really present right now. This morning we drove past a car with its 4 ways on with a massive dent in its driver side fendor/hood and covered in blood. Our guess was they hit a deer. I can only imagine how tramatizing it is to hit one.

Amazingly I've never hit one either.

bcunning, Hitting a cat must have been awful for you, I'm so sorry. I appreciate you sharing that story. I know it happens to a lot of people.

You saying the above ^^ was really sweet, thank you!

  • *hugs* Sorry to hear that! :( I get freaked out about this every fall/winter...

Hopefully your parents understand. It wasn't like you tried to hit the deer. Worst case, you can come here. We understand, love you and will give you as many interwebz hugs as you need :)
  • I'm sorry you had some back luck this morning Kelly, but as the others have said, please don't blame yourself or feel like an idiot. It happens all the time, and at least you are safe, even if you're shaken up. Cars can be fixed. I'm sure your parents will understand.

Congrats on being so close to graduation! You must be so excited about that!

  • I am ditto-ing PP...it was NOT your fault. It's not like you got up this morning and thought "Hmm...think I'll go hit a deer and wreck my car! Sounds like oodles of fun!" It was an accident that could have happened to any one of us. I'm just glad that you're unharmed (you are ok, right?). I cried hysterically when I hit a kamikaze rabbit once. It was either the rabbit or me and the Bean. I'm sorry you're feeling down and crummy. So I'm going to give you Bean's words to me last night: "Don't be sad that [the deer] is dead. Be happy that he's going to heaven now."
    Hugs hugs and more hugs!

  • Aw thanks bean, that was what BF said to me too. My mentor teacher has also been really good about it, she said she would look at the car with me this afternoon when it stops raining to make sure there's no fluid leaking.

I called my mom during a free period and she was really great about it. She was just happy that I wasn't hurt and that the car wasn't totaled. She's going to tell my dad about it when he wakes up. Apparently one of my birthday presents was going to be getting my car repainted and fixed up before I move to MA so I guess this will just be an additional expense...bleh.

I also called Honda to see if I can get it looked at this afternoon before I drive 3 1/2 hours home Friday afternoon. I think the car is just dented but I want it to be checked out before I take a big trip - otherwise my parents will have to come and bring me home

  • I think your parents will just be glad you are safe!  I've known someone who was killed in an accident with an elk, so a little dent in the car is seriously nothing to worry about!

  • I live in Michigan which I think had one of/the highest number of deer collisions. I hit my first one this past year and it really shook me up too. As PPs have said it's absolutely not your fault. I know it sounds cruel but it's better that you hit the deer instead of swerving and hitting another car or something more solid. I'm glad that you are ok.

I've never hit a cat before in my life until about a year and a half ago. I hit 2 within a week of each other. I was devastated. It's definitely a horrible experience even if you aren't a cat person. My mom tried joking about it, but it just made me cry. But things like that happen. I'm just happy that they both died on impact. I'd have felt even worse if they had to suffer. : (

Please do this. I got into a fender bender once...didn't seem like a big deal, but went straight to the shop to find out that a crucial hose was bent. Had I let the car run just a few minutes longer, they tech said it could have blown up in my face. Just have them take a quick look and make sure nothing major is wrong. It's always good to just be sure.

  • ::hugs:: I'm sorry. I can't imagine how hard this is. :( Boo. Unfortunately it happens all the time. Andrew's Aunt hit a deer one time and didn't talk about it for years! I think it's good you are talking about it so that you can move on.

Unfortunately, this is kind of how the life cycle works. You didn't do anything wrong. Not one single thing. I'm glad you are okay!!

  • Thanks for all your support and concern.
I'll be heading down to the Honda dealership at 3 to make sure my car is safe to drive home. Both my parents were really good about it.

I feel sort of weird and achy but I think it's just from all the stress and I'm getting a little hypochondriac-y lol.

Oh wow, I can't even imagine hitting a bat! Of all the things I am afraid of, it's always amazed me that bats are not one of them. I just can't help but think they're so cute!

  • I hit a deer a few years ago, I was fine, car was kind of banged up.  I called 911 about the accident and I kept telling them because the deer got hit pretty hard but still ran away, to go find the deer and check on it, make sure it is ok...

Be glad you are ok though. It does suck though.

I totally had that happen last week with a damn pigeon.  I saw it flying right into my windshield, not sure where it went after that, but I'm pretty sure it didn't live.

  • Sounds like a rough day :(
