What are you reading?

Re: What are you reading?

  • DJ, you should try again. I think that's why I quit the first time. Maybe make sure that you're relaxing in bed or stuck on an airplane.

LDY, #3 was my favorite, because it was the first one that made me want to keep reading. But if you already knew what was going to happen, then it might not have been the same.
  • Oh yeah, Prisoner of Azkaban was good - I didn't really remember much of that movie so it was a good one to get sucked into too :)
Yep - #5. So far this one if my favorite. I think it's because I haven't seen this movie at all and I have absolutely no clue what's going on. All of the others I sort of had a clue and I was just waiting for that "thing" to happen (like the tri-wizard tournament and what not). I don't know what's going on in this book and I'm kind of pumped about it.
    Posted by LDYGTR13
Oh sad - had you seen the movie before reading The Goblet of Fire? That one was my favorite because I had no idea how it was going to end. So many people loved Prisoner of Azkaban, but I loved GoF. The ending made me pre-order Order of the Phoenix on amazon and run home from work the day it came out.

Yeah, I had, unfortunately. I can't wait to re-watch everything now. I'm glad I haven't seen anything past GoF though, the rest should be rather interesting to read.

  • My favorites are 4 and 7. I think my least favorites are 2 and 5. Harry is just so angsty and it annoys me.

Maybe it is time for my annual HP reread.

  • Rupert, I didn't enjoy #2 either. Well, I mean I read it, but it definitely wasn't my favorite.

  • I am an HP convert. At first, I wanted nothing to do with anything HP. I have all the movies now, have watched all of them, and want to read the books. I have heard how awesome they are, and look forward to reading them.

I am almost finished playing Lego HP years 5-7 too.Embarassed I think those Lego games are too cute.

Ahh. At least you have the ending saved for you. I think Rowling did a decent job ending (decent - not awesome. But I was satisified with how Harry's story ends). I was so pissed in the theater watching the second half of The Deathly Hallows so definitely read the book before seeing the movie!
  • I'm reading Stephen King's "Desperation" and it is amazing! I can't put it down!
Rupert, I thoroughly enjoy WWII and Holocaust books (that sounds wrong), and this one had an interesting perspective and story. Although it wasn't nearly as compelling as others that I have read, such as Sarah's Key . I've also heard that some people were confused by the end and thinking that Max and the Book Thief (blanking on her name right now) got married.
    Posted by MattsPenguin
Sarah's Key was great! I love reading Holocaust books (I know that does sound wrong) but I really enjoy reading about people's stories and what they went through because it is such an important part of history. However, I'm normally not a fan of fiction Holocaust books like Sarah's Key, but I have to say that I really thought it could have been a true story that occurred and I learned a lot about France and their involvement in the Holocaust.

(The show?) If you did - Confessions of a Prairie Biitcch was really good :)
    Posted by LDYGTR13
I want to read that! I also read something called The Wilder Life last year, where the author went to all the Little House on the Prairie museums and sites. It was pretty decent.

I'm reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman right now. I've heard it called "Harry Potter for adults." It's about a guy who gets into a magical college. It's actually pretty good. There are definite similarities to Harry Potter and, later, to Chronicles of Narnia. I hope to finish today, and there's a sequel. It's not where near as detailed and "world building" as HP, though.

Yes! It was very interesting reading about the French police's involvement, since they don't like to talk about it. We're going to Paris next week, and I'm intrigued to find the Vel d'Hiv plaque. I know that the building itself doesn't exist any more.

Ugh, I agree... I do not like Book 5. It was just bad all around, to this day I still have trouble figuring out what the purpose of that book really was. Haha. 4 and 7 are my favorites too! I also like 6 because it answered a lot of questions for me!
In Response to Re: What are you reading? : All I know is that the characters, Christian and Ana, were Edward and Bella in the Fanfic. And I guess the location is the same as Twilight (I haven't read nor seen any of the Twilight stuff). How it went from the Twilight story to the dominant/submissive story of Fifty Shades, I have no idea.
    Posted by Holly4212011
I haven't read 50 Shades, but I've heard that all the characters have a "parallel." So there's an Alice character, a Carlisle character, etc. When it got published, she just changed the names.

Also, not all fanfic has supernatural elements. This one (the original was called Master of the Universe) just concentrated on Edward and Bella's sexual relationship, not the vampire aspect. In fanfic sometimes the characters are in different time periods, sometimes it's an alternate universe where Bella's a werewolf, or they aren't supernatural at all.

Her historical fiction set in the Tudor/Elizabeathan time period is fantastic, too. I really loved 'Innocent Traitor, which is about Jane Grey.

I just finished up The Secret Daughter, which was an EXCELLENT fiction read about adoption and Indian culture. I have a scifi/dystopian lit novel, The Windup Girl, to start today.

And there's a film version of Handmaid's Tale!? That's probably in my top 5 books of all time. Someone tell me honestly - will the film version just make me angry?
