I don't get it either - I read The Host and the writing was atrocious I barely was able to get through it so I can't even imagine how bad it is in the Twilight series

I found the books entertaining.  It's a nice change to the type of things I have to read for school.  I also think there's anything wrong with someone over 17 enjoying the books.  Though I do side-eye obsession over 17.

However, the Twilight books are the mostly poorly written stories I have ever read.  They're terrible, IMO.

And I think the relationships in the books are entirely unhealthy. I hope that most kids don't need to use fictional characters as models, but I'm sure it's fairly common and I think that's really unfortunate.

Meyer is a horrible writer.  And the relationships are a TAD unhealthy.  But there's something about the plotline that kept me interested.  Then again, I'm old enough to realize that these books do not represent normality... at all.

Meyer can write about as good as a 17 year old thus why Twilight appeals to them. The plot is predicable and boring, the characters have no depth and don't grow throughout the series. It paints a picture of a totally abusive/unhealthy relationship as the perfect relationship. Its sad that anyone loves the books or the movies. And unfortunately its not just teenage girls its women all of the damn place.

I will admit I've seen the movies (to make fun of them with friends). I read the books hoping they were better (because the books often are). If you think these first 3 have been bad the fourth one is the absolute worst.

The actors in the movie can't act and the special effects suck. Overall its just a sad statement on about our society that these movies/books are so popular.

    Really?  Relax.

Why is it sad that anyone like the books or movies?  There ARE some people who enjoy either one purely for entertainment.  As I said, I also believe the relationships in the book are unhealthy.  However, a lot of people are smart enough to realize this and are not using the Twilight series as a guidebook for real life.  It's called fun.  Some people like to have it.

I agree with you Ana - I don't think it's really sad that anyone likes them. Everyone has different tastes or styles of writing - her writing doesn't appeal to me but I don't think it's sad that people enjoy the books. I have a number of books that I thoroughly enjoy even though the writing and/or story is sub-par.

I do think it's odd that people have an obsession with these books though - I had a former co-worker that said to me one day 'I wish my husband was more like my Edward'. It was strange to me to compare her real-life husband and father of her child to a fictional adolescent vampire. She was weird all around though and the only person I knew who took the series so seriously.

Psh, I wrote much better than she does now when I was 17.

But honestly, it's not as serious as you think. I just happen to think the story is dumb and don't really get why it's so popular. I don't think it's a blight on society.
  • edited December 2011
    Ditto Ana. Relax a bit.

I'm a rational, logical adult.  I like the books purely because I find them entertaining.  I don't think it's a huge black mark against society that people enjoy the books.  I mean, this is about fictional vampires... the relationships in the book are therefore fictional and don't need to follow the same "rules" as real relationships.  If you don't enjoy this type of story, that's fine. To each their own.

I do find it a little sad how obessesed all the tweens and teenagers get over the books.  There ARE some girls and women out there who really wish they could be Bella.   But that's they way teenagers can be, and that's where I think it's the parent's job to step in and intervene.

OMG. Seriously? I'm not all worked up over this. I wrote the post in like 2 seconds. You are allowed to like the books I really don't care. Personally I think they are horribly written and send a bad message to young girls who read them. You have your opinion and I have mine. Its really not a big deal.

No one, not once, said you weren't allowed to have your own opinion.  And I don't think anyone disagreed that they are horribly written and send a bad message to girls.

What was said is that your belief that NO ONE should love the books and implying that women who like them are reflecting poorly on society was ridiculous.   Of course you can have your own opinion, but you have to understand that your opinion leads me to conclude that you are ignorant.

And why is someone's choice to read fluffy teen novels for entertainment any less worthy than your choice to spend your free time on wedding chat board?

I know I'm being defensive about it, but my reason for that is personal and I don't feel the need to explain to you why your comments are ridiculous, closed-minded, and hurtful.

See, Anne Rice vampires are actually scary to me.  I can't do real horror without getting nightmares for a month.
    image
  • edited December 2011
Scary? Nah, they're not scary. They're well-developed characters with tense and dramatic plotlines and quite a bit of romance and a dash of gore (some books have more gore than others).

Louis was emo before there was a term for it. But he was COOL emo. Not... weird emo like Edward. Edward is like a wannabe Louis. "Oh, wah, you don't understand me. Oh, wah, I'm a monster.... I GLITTER! Ugh. I want to die."

    Cry me a river.

My problem with Twilight (having only seen the movies) is the main characters. Bella and Edward are so vanilla. And WHY does Bella look like she's going to throw up whenever she gets a crush on a guy? I could tell when she started digging Jacob because instead of looking like a normal person, she looked about to gag.

And Edward.... lame. Lame lame lame. Every other vampire IN that movie was more interesting (and better portrayed) than Edward. The doctor guy is really cool. Alice is one of my favorites. But between Edward and Bella, I just feel sorry for today's youth. Because you know there are girls out there (whose parents won't step in) who think that the best thing EVER would be to do exactly what Bella does.

At least in the Vampire Chronicles, there were repercussions for acting like an idiot. And vampires could actually DIE, not just glitter like a christmas ornament.

I should have prefaced this post with, "I am only watching the movies, and only because I want to find out which one she chooses".

Only because, I work ft and have an 18 month old and really, I only hear about the movies that are pretty popular...I don't really have time to be indie and cool anymore lol.

I don't really give a sh*t what the kids are doing in real life, I just think the movies have some cool effects and fight scenes and things and are quite entertaining for a couple of hours when I'd like a break from real life.  Teenagers are going to be teenagers, and if it isn't this it'll be something else.  Anyone remember the Hanson craze?
