Help, how do I return a dress?

I bought a dress that I have decided is just not for me and the store said there are no returns!  Does anyone know of any legal ways to fight this?  The store never told me there were no returns and pressured me to the extreme.  In the pressure I did not read the fine print.  Is there any legal way to fight the store?  I live in CA.

Re: Help, how do I return a dress?

  • Unfortunately most bridal shops are REALLY strict and don't let you return a dress. Could you see maybe if you can exchange it for store credit and pick out something else? I haven't heard of many shops doing that either but it's worth a shot!

  • Yes I hassled them to the point of being able to exchange it.  I would rather just get my money back if legally possible because I think they are so unethical.  any ideas?
  • There probably isn't much hope for this. Exchanging it would be possibly your best option.  You should go back to your receipt or paperwork and check the fine print. Most likely, it says that the dress is a final sale and cannot be returned. If they will allow for an exchange, you should probably just take it and try to find something that you like better.
  • If they are williing to let your exchange it go for it. Really what they did was not unethical it was normal for the sales industry. Unetihical is cutting out the designers names, not telling your who makes the gown or what it is made of.  If they are willing to let you exchange it that is more them 90% of salons would do so I would defently take it.

Ditto.  As much as it sucks to be pressured by sales people, it's still considered the customer's responsibility to read the fine print so, legally, the store really isn't at fault.

  • Agree with pp. It it isn't likely that they will give you your money back and an exchange does seem like your best option.

The only thing I can think of is, if they haven't ordered your dress from the designer yet or the designer hasn't started manufacturing your dress you might be able to get your money back. But one of the reasons most bridal shops don't do returns is because they still have to pay the designer for the dress even if you don't want it, so they're really out some money if the dress has already been made and they give you your money back.
  • Yeah, they really aren't unethical, considering they abide by the same rules as most bridal stores.

You can try selling the dress, though you'll probably get less than you paid for it. I think the credit is your best bet.
