Is this really what the world is coming to?

Re: Is this really what the world is coming to?

  • I think I would be more concerned about an unaccompanied minor getting lost in the shuffle before and after the flight. Too me, that would be the most stressful - making sure my kid got from me to the plane, and the plane to the receiving person on the other end of the trip. If you're going to worry about the plane crashing with your kid on it... wouldn't you just not go on a plane at all?

This is one of the most bizarre posts we've had in awhile (not the OP, but the responses).

Anyhoo, we've had a couple instances come up where the kiddo could have been a UM, but we nixed it both times because we didn't feel he was ready.  Now that he's 11.5 I'd consider it,  but there'd have to be a really good reason.  I can't see one coming up unless he went to visit BIL by himself or something.

I'm not surprised (sadly) that child preadators could be an issue on a plane.   Planes are so loud and people only pay half-attention to what's going on.  I can see how a preadator could make the opportunity work for them. (<--- thinking about that makes me sick)

Don't UM's have to be of a certain age?  You can't send a 4 year old (or even 6 year old) as a UM, right?  They have to be an older kid, right?  And after 15/16 or so, it's a non-issue (at least I think it would be for me).
  • I can't remember how old I was when I went as a UM.  I think it was 11/12.  I had a huge red tag on me.  My parents took me to the gate and had to stay with me, the flight attendant took charge of me when they were loading and walked me right to my seat after everyone else had boarded.  I also couldn't leave until everyone else left, take off my name tag, etc.  Then, the flight attendant walked me off.  All of the flight attendants seemed to take it really seriously; I was never left alone or not under an eagle eye the entire time.  I think it'd be pretty hard for someone to have done anything to me.

The reason you're being mocked Flany, is b/c it's a well known fact that the likelihood of you dying in a cross country drive is far higher than a cross country flight.  And maybe you wouldn't let your kid go, Good for you.  But fact doesn't make you morally superior to anyone.
  • i2i with Varuna (as usual)

Arguing the fatality of a child and the vehicle in which that child dies, seems completely asinine to me.

Especially considering the ACTUAL TOPIC.  *sigh*

There is your problem.  You'll run into tall buildings at that altitude.  Go up another 23,000 feet or more.

    hahaha

  • I obviously meant 20000 feet.
  • But usually planes fly at about 35-37,000 feet. Just FYI.
  • you know what happens when you fly at 20,000 feet?  gremlins.
