Photographer Hours?

How long or how many hours do you really need a photographer? How many hours before the ceremony and how many hours into the reception is it good for them to be there? That seems to be the first question they ask.

Re: Photographer Hours?

I would say you want the photographer for some of your getting ready process through about the first hour of dancing..  My photographer is coming for 12 hours. I don't think 12 hours is completely necessary but since I have her I will definitaly take her for that long.  I guess it just depends on what pictures you are looking for.  GL!

I loved that you asked this question because i'm in the same boat as you!  8 hours will cover 2 hours before our ceremony up until the last hour of our reception, so we are just going to go with the 8, but could probably do 6.

I did 9 hours since I am doing photo's before the ceremony with the FI and bridal party and my ceremony/reception at the same space (I also accounted for travel time which counts). That will get me some tail end getting ready pics all the way through a little bit of dancing!

We ended up having our photog come at 1, ceremony was at 3, we did pictures in between, he stayed until about 10, which was an hour past the first dance. I thought it was perfect. Originally I thought I needed him all night, but after a while all the dancing pictures look the same.

Included in our price, we have two photographers; 1 traditional and 1 photojournalist.  The package includes unlimited hours and unlimited photos.  My daughter was extremely specific as to how "unlimited" hours was defined, because she tends to "open" her fitness club at 5 AM and, at this moment, still thinks she will work out the morning of the wedding.  She wanted to know whether the photographer would be "up" (literally and figuratively) for taking photos then/there.

I should add that this photographer is a "local"; he lives and works in our town (although he travels anywhere for clients), and he may have the luxury of going home during "down" periods to take a break/nap if the day allows that!  That said, I would plan for 10 hours----noon to 10 PM, at the least.  You may not get a lot of the "prep" pictures, but you will get ceremony/reception----keep in mind that often the bouquet toss and other last traditions don't happen until after dinner, which can go as late as 9 or 10.  But with digital cameras now, I am sure many guests will/can cover any "down times" throughout the day and night.

We had ours for 8 hours and it was plenty of time. He came at 3 for 2 hours of getting ready shots, we had an hour at the mansion before the ceremony to do more shots of the bridal party, ceremony was at 6:30, and he stayed until 11 which covered all the major events at the reception (toasts, dances, tosses, etc).

Our photog is contracted for 10 hours in our package. I think that's plenty, that will cover photos before the wedding and through the entire reception.

Our photog was with us from 10AM to 11PM. She was there for some of the getting ready and for almost the entire reception.

Six to eight hours seems standard. We opted for eight but have two photographers. Our thoughts were that hundreds of dancing pictures taken by two people would be a bit much!
