NWR: Feeling like a jerk!

I've worked at the same resort bartending for about 4 1/2 years.  I work pretty much in the summer at the outdoor bar, but fill in when needed during the fall/winter/spring doing banquets, weddings, parties, etc (maybe 5-10 times a year).  My boss always checks with me before scheduling me since I don't have any sort of regular schedule so I don't make my plans around work.  Last weekend one of my friends was desperate for me to cover for him so I did.  At the end of the night I was talking to my boss and told him I can't work until New Years.  Well, I got a text at 4 today from him saying that I was supposed to be in at 3:30.  I told him I had no idea and I told him last week that I couldn't work until New Years.  I said had I known I was in I definitely would have been there.  (I'm going to a neighborhood Christmas party so I could have skipped it if I had to).  But either way, I live 45 mins away and my work shirt is in the washer from last week.  He told me no problem someone must have scheduled me (I'm not really sure who does the scheduling, he's the one that always asks me my availability).  It's not like me to not show up to work....if I'm scheduled I always go in or at the very least find someone to cover for me.   I know my boss knows that which is why he probably said it's not a big deal, but I still hate not living up to my responsibilities. I just don't want to burn my bridges there considering I need a lot of days off this coming summer for the wedding/honeymoon.

  • Oh no!  That really stinks, although I'm sure it is not your fault.  Something similar happened with my Fi a few years back.  His boss called us on our second day in Rhode Island on a mini-vacation asking where he was and my Fi was like "remember how I specifically asked for Sunday-Wednesday off because I wanted to plan a trip?  Well I am in RI now..." and the boss was like "oh yeah, woops!"

These things happen.  If you have been there for four and a half years already, you must have established a great working relationship and proven yourself as an employee.  One mistake that is not your fault will not ruin that.

  • That really sucks I'm sorry. Sounds like he understood though

I agree. I think after working ther e over 4 years, you have established yourself. One mix up that wasn't even your fault won't ruin things. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Well...I ended up not working and went to our neighborhood Christmas party. We live in a very young neighborhood where a lot of people are young parents, pregnant, or young couples. One couple that is about our age went away for their one year "dating" anniversary and got engaged!!' I'm so happy for them considering he was once engaged to one of my old managers when I worked I retail and I hated her. So happy he got engaged to a much better girl!
