Clueless on Wedding DJ/Emcee

Hello Ladies,
I am confused as to how this works. I thought all DJs were also emcees (I am just using my experience at clubs not really any wedding experience) but I have been running into a lot of DJs that aren't emcees.

Should I be looking for 2 people as opposed to 1? If so, what's a reasonable price to pay an emcee (wedding will be in MA)? I want one who'll get folks on the dance floor. Since they'll be a mix of nigerians and americans there, I'd like to have a DJ that emcees and can get everyone on the dance floor.

Any thoughts? I guess my questions are:
1. Do I have to get a separate person to emcee?
2. What's a reasonable amount to pay an emcee?

TIA!

Every DJ we have talked to also does the MC duties.  I haven't heard of many instances where there were two separate people doing this at a wedding, but I'm sure it happens.  I would say hold out for someone that does both - no need to pay two people for the job one person can do, and also I think it helps that the MC/DJ be the same person for continuity and flow.

I have no idea how much an MC would cost, but I would think no more than a couple of hundred dollars?  I mean all they're doing is saying a few things on the mic every now and then?

A friend of ours charges $300 to emcee. He does lots of weddings, but I'm not sure if that's a typical price. He's a comedian (not famous) so that's why people book him...for the humor too. That may factor into his cost.

I've never heard of them being a separate person unless you have someone specific in time (i.e. a friend in the radio business or something).

But from my experience, an important question is do you actually want someone talking at your reception? Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes not so much. If you do end up finding one, make sure you like what he's going to say.
