Making jewelry out of coins

Has anyone ever made jewelry out of old or foreign coins?  I saw it on Etsy and now I really want to try it out. I have oodles of coins from other countries that I think would make some cool pieces.

Also - in junior high my Industrial Shops teacher told me (well, the whole class) that it's illegal to use money for anything but currency and if you deface money (we were punching holes through pennies) you could get in big trouble.  Does anyone know if this is really true? It sounds kind of ridiculous to me...

  • I think as long as you dont have plan or intend on trying to use the coins as money again then you should be fine. I found this while googling information on the subject (I was bored and had nothing to do)

  • I don't know about foreign coins but it is a crime to deface US currency. I highly doubt anyone would ever get in trouble though.

  • I'm pretty sure with all of the murders, drug rackets, embezzlement schemes, rapes and assaults going on out there, the cops have way better things to do than bust somebody wearing a bracelet of coins valued at $0.32 USD, ya know? Tongue Out

I am in trouble - I buy those souvenir stretched pennies whenever I see the machines - I even have a special little holder for my collection.

LOL. I'm sure the cops have better things to do.
