Uneven WP.....WP dance

So I currently have a WP of 5 on each side.  My side includes both a maid of honor and a matron of honor.  I have another friend tha I would like to ask but haven't yet because I wanted to be sure that I wanted uneven sides first.

If I do ask the other friend, I really like the idea of pairing the maid and matron of honors with the best man and having the other girls paired with the other 4 groomsmen.

What I was wondering was how would I pair up the WP dance at the reception.  I know I don't really need one but (GASP) my bridesmaids actually WANT to do the WP dance....lol.....so I figure I should make them happy because I really didn't care either way.

So if the maid and matron are both paired with the best man for the ceremony, how do we do the dance?  Any ideas?

THANKS!

  • Please reconsider the wedding party dance.  It can be boring and energy sapping for your guests, especially if it comes in a long line of other spotlight dances.  DH and I attended a wedding one time where there was a good 30 minutes of certain people only dances - the bride and groom's first dance, the bride and her dad, then the groom and his mom, then bridal party - one after the other.  It was just too much, and people started to leave for the bar, the outside patio, any place where they could talk or have a good time withouth feeling like they were being rude to the parties on the dance floor.

If you want to acknowledge your bridal party, consider letting them join in with their own SOs at the end of your first dance with your FI or dedicating a specific song to them later in the reception, but not requiring a group dance number.

If you really want this other girl as your BM then ask her. Don't let the uneven sides and WP dance effect this decision. Honestly - just skip it all together. It's super awkward, especially if the WP party members have an SO amongst the guest. Think about how their SO feels? I'd be pretty annoyed if my fiance had to dance with some random girl at a wedding instead of me. Maybe it sounds petty but personally I tihnk it's insulting.

And just another dance for your guests to sit through.
  • Another vote for skipping the WP dance.  It means absolutely NOTHING to your guests or the WP, and it is just one more dance to have to sit through.

Don't worry about even sides, ask those who are important to you.  They will all thank you for skipping the dance.  I've never heard a WP say they were bummed they didn't have to do that.

I am going to steal this idea for my own wedding. My FI does not want to dance around for 3 minutes while everyone watches us. I want to have that first moment with him, this would be a good compromise. Have it be just FI and I during the first half of the song, then have the WP join with their SOs.

To answer OP question- don't worry too much about how many people, even or uneven, just ask who you want to be a part of it. Nix the WP dance and you'll be fine. Nobody will be counting to see how many people you have up there.

    ITA.

DH & I don't dance a lot in general, much less with another girl or guy.

WP dances feel very "middle school dance" to me.
  • There isn't a good way to do this if you have uneven sides. Three people who dont' know each other well trying to dance through a song where they are under the spotlight is awkward. But consider what everyone else is saying.

Are even sides so you can have a BP dance worth passing over a good friend for the honor of being a BM?

  • I also hate WP dances.  TRUST me.  I just texted my WP girls with the SO dance idea and most are liking that compromise.  Thanks for the advice!
  • Ok....so my WP girls are suggesting they do a line dance instead.  I think that would be fun.  And then after they do it a few times the DJ could invite everyone to join in and finish it out.  What a fun idea!!!!!!
  • Let me clarify.......having uneven sides DOES NOT MATTER TO ME.  I was simply asking for a WP  dance alternative which I now have.  I haven't asked the other friend yet simply because I had recently reconnected with her and realized that I wanted her in the WP.....otherwise I would have asked her in the beginning.

As for the dance, I was just trying to make the my WP happy.  I was the one who DIDN'T want a dance.  I didn't realize that it was rude to try to be accommodating.  I asked my WP and they came up with the line dance idea themselves and everyone is on board!

Thanks to everyone for their very useful advice!

  • Love the idea, Retread!
  • I would also agree to skip on the WP dance, I've never been to a wedding where I have seen it before, but I have seen youtube videos, yay it looks cool, but seems to take away from the wedding, have your WP join you towards the end of the first dance.  for the uneven sides, I like the idea of having your MOH and your Matron of honor walk the best man down the isle, it'll probably make the guy feel like hes the man walking down with two beautiful girls on each arm.
  • Don't have a WP dance. It's antiquated and out-dated.

Have your first dance and then just let your BP and guests join in. It's not the middle school dance - you don't need to force adults to dance together. I'm sure they'd rather dance with their S/Os.
