groom/groomsmen attire for destination wedding

Any ideas on what they should wear? Do you think the groom should look distinguished from the groomsmen? What are some good sites for beachwear?

Re: groom/groomsmen attire for destination wedding

  • If you're going for a beachy vibe khakis and some kind of short sleeve button down shirt might be good for the guys.  If you want the groom to look different he could wear a different color shirt (i.e. white for groom, wedding color for guys), I don't think he has to be different although IMHO I think it would look better for the groom to be different.  But I've seen tuxes on the beach too so anything goes.

Tommy Bahama designs beachwear but I don't think you really need to go anywhere special.  If you're looking for Hawaiian type shirts I've seen them at department stores like Penney's or they might even find something in the souvenir shops when they get to your destination.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

He has the option of simply wearing a loose shirt & pants, tie optional if you are having a barefoot-on-the-beach type wedding with a casual vibe. He could also go with a light cotton suit- ideal for its breathability and wrinkle-resistancy. The factor that should help him decide is how formal your wedding will be. I recommend that he phone the resort where you are getting married (assuming its a resort) to speak to someone about what grooms have recently worn during their ceremonies to help him figure out what would be appropriate for your destination. Let him make the ultimate decision so that he is happy and comfortable with what he is wearing.

You really have more latitude that you might think with a beach wedding. What time of day? How elaborate of a setup will you have? (floor on the beach? sand? fancy chairs? tiki toches?)

Assuming you're going with the beach au naturel during the daytime, I'd suggest cotton or linen (linen's wrinkles and weave make it more casual) in a light color. Perhaps a light tan or stone would be nice for trousers and jackets, if going that route. A simple linen or cotton shirt for the gentlemen would pair well. J. Crew and L.L. Bean have nice linen suits. You can even look at Macy's for something appropriate. If you're in the South and your Groom has the confidence to rock one, he could even go with a seersucker suit! Any way you go, just be sure to have the outfit it tailored appropriately. Baggy, poorly fitting clothes don't say "casual and beach-y" they say "sloppy and lazy."

Personally, I'd stay away from short sleeves. A long-sleeve shirt will look much more put-together- even if the guys choose to roll up the sleeves. If they're wearing a light cotton or linen, overheating shouldn't be an issue.

As for distinguishing your Groom from his Groomsmen, it isn't necessary per se. He'll already be the male star of the show. Be sure all the gents are in the same level of dress, but vary a detail or two if you wish. A different lapel flower or slightly different color suit perhaps may do the trick.
