Not exactly etiquette, but c'mon...

Re: Not exactly etiquette, but c'mon...

  • Things I've seen lately:
    alot
    rediculous
    dillema or dilemna or delimma
and all the others mentioned above.

Regarding pluralizing a year, the style guide we used at my old job was very specific: 1990s for "in the 1990s" and 1990's for "1990's dance moves." But the writers hated how clunky it sounded, so they'd reword to say "dance moves in the 1990s."

  • Where did dilemna come from?  I thought that was the correct spelling for years.  It had to have come from somewhere, meaning I saw it someplace, but I can't for the life of me figure out where I got that spelling.  Oh well!

The thing that kills me is the substitution of text speak for real words.  My students use it on papers and it drives me crazy.  I mark them down for it and they don't understand why.
  • Surprised it took this long to mention the 'isle."

"Hors d'oeuvres" and "boutonnieres" spelled incorrectly drive me nuts too, but to be fair those are really hard to spell even if you're trying.

<div>True, except TK does have spell check.  I can never remember how to spell hors d'ouvres or boutonniere, but spell check saves me every time.</div>

The only time grammar and mispelling really grate on me here is when there are multiple errors in a person's post and I don't already know them well enough to know the mitake was just an oversight.

Like Loopy's apostrophe error. I know her well enough to know that was a honest mistake. It's when the spelling and grammar are so bad I can't even decipher what the hell the person is trying to say.

Yup. If I have to whip out my first-grade-invented-spelling-reading-skills, then you ain't doing it right.

I think we are just not teaching grammar and spelling like they used to.  I had my sixth graders write a few sentences the other day and I had a couple that I seriously couldn't read.  It is sad!

  • My best friend is an English teacher.  She was told in teacher's college that she was not to be worrying about grammar but instead focus on the creativity of the student.  I became worried when I heard that!  My own students write using "text speak" and it is like one big puzzle most days.  Luckily I am a math teacher!

"Bout" works just fine for me.

There's a poster on another board that uses text speak.  I simply can't read it.  She might be very intelligent, but it just looks like alphabet soup, so I skip every one of her posts.

  • Another one that irritates me is "advice" vs "advise" or "isle" and "aisle".  I'm sure sometimes they can just be typos, but sadly, I think a lot of people just don't know the difference.

  • Earlier today I wrote on a thread "her and her fiancee" and knew someone would be annoyed.  In my case I was correct as they are a lesbian couple.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

  • What annoys me is people not knowing how to use dollar signs. "My dress cost 2000$ and the alterations were 165$."  No, no, no.

Even though I KNOW the difference between their/they're/there and to/two/too I've caught myself making typos of those errors. So I forgive more easily there unless it's something that is done 15 times in one post.

I delete typos from my Facebook Wall.

My sister feels judged sometimes (others probably don't notice).  My Wall is grammar-compliant! If people want to text-speak and verbally dribble all over their own internet property, they are more than welcome to do so.
