Migraines?

Anyone have any good home remedies?

I just got home and DH has one.   He gets maybe one a year--sees spots, throws up, and then just has to ride it out in a dark quiet room for a day or so.  I've never had one, so I have no idea what it's like, but he seems pretty miserable.  I know he took some aspirin, but nothing beyond that.  Help?

  • I have to take prescription meds for mine. When those aren't available, I need to lay in a dark, quiet room. No noise, no light. Ice-pack on my head.

  • Are the migraine formulas any different from the regular Excederin/aspirin stuff?  If so, I'll run out and get some.

  • Home remedy that works for me, running my hands under very hot water when I start to get one. My hands and face will go numb and the hot water can help.
I think reflexology works for some people too.

Excedrin Migraine is virtually identical to Excedrin Extra-Strength. They both have 250 mg aspirin, 65 mg caffeine. The only difference is the MIgraine has 200 mg acetaminophen and Exra Strength has 250 (so extra strength is actually stronger).
I don't get official migraines, but do get terrible headaches (not necessarily the same thing). For me, the only thing that will help is Excedrin and sleep. For my  headaches, tylenol, advil, etc. are useless.

It's my understanding that migraines are pretty narrowly defined. It's that actually what he has, there are medicines that he should get and keep in the house for the rare occasion it strikes.
  • I get migraines really bad. Excedrin Migraine is the only thing that has ever helped me. Nothing else works...

If it's a tension headache, I take Excedrin Tension Headache, but it only works for me if it really is a tension headache. Excedrin Migraine + dark + quiet room + ice pack or cold cloth on the head.

I hope he feels better. Poor fella. I hate migraines. Embarassed

  • Yeah I cant add anything that these ladies haven't yet. My go too is about the same, as soon as my eyes start getting unfocused I take something then it doesn't come on as bad.

I hope he feels better. We can empathize.

  • i also suffer from terrible migraines and so does FI. For both of us, excedrine migraine works VERY well. ive also noticed that off brand migraine medicine works just as well. it's usually a $1-2 cheaper- if it matters.
for me also a dark, cool room to sleep in.
hope your hubby feel better soon. :(

i recently had Fi put a tint on our bedroom windows because sunlight was a HUGE trigger for mine. i see a lot of you suffer from them. it has helped mine quite a bite.
just a window tint from home depot. dark curtains just wasn't enough.

His migraines sound a lot like mine. Honestly, taking medication never works for me because I always throw up, and I find the best solution is dark room, attempt to sleep straight after throwing up (because it's the only time that your head gives you a little respite), try to keep some water down and put a wet cool towel on your head.

My neurologist suggested particular medication, but I haven't required it yet as I rarely get migraines anymore. She also said that for some people, paracetamol and ibuprofen plus caffiene helps (but only if you get it in before the headache itself strikes, aka during the visual aura), but that was really more of a 'last resort' type treatment for those times when you don't have prescribed migraine medication on hand.

I'd suggest that once the migraine is over, your H should see a doctor to get some proper medication... and in the meantime, hopefully he'll get through this one ok. If he gets really dehydated, you can always present at emergency/after-hours doctors and they can give you an injection of painkillers (but it's the getting there that's difficult when you're constantly throwing up and can barely move!).

  • I suffer from migraines....usually three or four times a month.  Some tricks you can try if he wakes up feeling worse or not better
-Ice cold coke....the sugar and caffeine help
-Put an ice pack on his head and his feet in warm/hot water.....it is supposed to confuse the vascular system and usually works well for me
-If he's really vomiting make sugar water freeze it and have him suck on the sugar water ice cubes
    - Peppermint tea can really alleviate the queasiness

My migraines tend to get horrific if I'm lying down completely.  I tend to be propped up in the darkness.  I'm also on a variety of prescription medications for them.
  • apro- if it's not too personal of me to ask, have you had your hormone levels checked?  I'm always supsicious about hormones being the culprit when women get migraines because I was finally able to determine that a progesterone deficiency/estrogen dominance was triggering mine each month.

  • My mom gets these a few times a year. The drug immitrex (sp) works wonders for her. Before she started using it she had to shut herself in a room for about a week.

    Icepacks, ginger, peppermint tea, darkness...

Other than prescriptions there's not much that I've seen alleviate them as far as home remedies go...but the above suggestions take a bit of the edge off. They seem absolutely brutal :(
  • Heat, Rx strength Naproxen + Sumatriptan (or Treximet, if your insurance will cover it - mine was bitchy about it), or a hydrocodone. If I've managed to stay at work, then when I get home, I head for the dark bedroom.

I also take no other pain killers during the year except Aleve/naproxen. Not even allergy/cold medicine with tylenol or advil in them, to avoid rebound headaches.

I get so many of them in between Feb and May, I gotta do what I gotta do.

  • I agree with using a prescription if you have bad migraines.  If you're relatively healthy, the "triptan" drugs are the best.  If you have health problems, an antinausea pill (prescription only) and a heavy pain pill combined with rest and a dark place will do wonders.  If you're having regular migraines, you should be checked out because there are some daily drugs that can prevent migraines.

=) Not too personal at all!  Yes I have had them checked and all are normal.  I actually have a rare/weird subset of a migraine disorder called abdominal migraines.  I get intense stomach pain (so intense they thought one time I was having a appendicitis...and rushed me into OR and took out my healthy appendix) on top of all of the other symptoms.  I also bruise on my abdomen.  Typically this manifestation of migraines is found in infants where the neural connections haven't properly synched in the brain.....I'm just one of those lucky adults where I never grew out of the problem and it was triggered again in college.  It also explained a lot to my parents why I was the worst infant in the world.  I'd scream for days and only sleep once I passed out.  Every Dr. told them I was merely had colic now my neurologist has informed them I was basically in pain the entire time.  I've never seen my mother cry so hard and I've never wanted to strangle a doctor until that moment!

I'm on medications to control my migraines such as Topomax which is actually a medication for epilepsy and Verapamil (actually for high blood pressure but I have low blood pressure so it just dilates blood vessels).  I also take other prescription meds when needed for an attack.

How have they treated your hormone induced migraines?

[QUOTE]Cold packs don't help me - I put a heating pad on my head.  So, if the cold doesn't work, try heat.  Just don't scorch yourself! I also prefer Aleeve and a soda to Excedrin, but that was before I had prescription meds.  They knock me out for about 4 hours, but I'm pretty much fine after that.  I've tried a lot of prevention methods, though, and mine are all stress triggered.  So, I get a massage regularly, walk myself through calming excercises, etc. whenever I feel a stress headache coming on so that it doesn't carry over the following day into a migraine.

Have you tried acupuncture?  It has worked wonders for my tension migraines and I detest needles!
