Eloping - where do we get our witnesses?

My fiance and I are thinking about eloping to San Francisco in August. We're from south Florida and we're not planning on having any friends or family fly out with us, nor do we know anyone in that area. Where do we get our witnesses? I've been researching photographers and they all say on their websites that they're willing to act as witnesses, but we need a witness for both the marriage license and the ceremony. I'd prefer to get the license the day before if possible so the photographer wouldn't be there. What to do?

PS, my apologies if this isn't the proper board. My fiance is a soldier and I know elopements are somewhat common in military marriages so I thought maybe you guys would know.

You can pay extra at the courthouse generally. Or other people in line end up doing it.

I heard of a couple recently, that did exactly what you're talking about doing, and they found an older couple in a diner and they asked them to be thier witnesses. I thought it was a really sweet story. Like Stan said, really it can be anyone!

The judge and the clerk and the courthouse (who performed the ceremony and the woman who did our paperwork) were our witnesses. But we had the license and certificate done all in the same day. There is no "wait period" if you're military. Some states generally have a 3-7 day wait period between the two.

Are you trying to save time the day you have your wedding by getting the license early?  In my experience, we waited the same amount of time as all the people that were there and got their license early (okay so it was one couple).  They served us in the order of appointment time.  IDK if every courthouse does it the same way though.  Hope this helps at least a little bit.
