br questions -- LONG

please indulge me, and criticize/explain.

what is a stroller blanket? what should i be looking for? this seems dumb, in that i can just use any blanket that is not a total suffocation hazard. i have fleece throws and a quilted throw; i imagine i will just use that.

what is the difference between a hooded baby towel and a regular towel? can't i just use the towels i already own? i don't have a hooded towel, and i'm doing okay with bathing. i haven't been called into hr or anything.

and the washcloths -- i still have 2 6-packs of washcloths from our wedding that i have not yet opened. are baby washcloths specially soft or treated with some kind of lamb placenta or something?

what the what at high chairs, man. a regular high chair and a travel high chair? are both necessary? can't i just get the travel one and use it in my home?

why don't playpens use the same size sheets as a crib? this is highly inconvenient.

where is the diaper stacker supposed to go? i see them hanging off cribs, but i don't plan on changing the kid there. also, it is unsightly, so right now, it is going in the closet, and the actual diapers are going into a drawer underneath the changing pad.

1. Never heard of it.

2. The hoods are to help keep their bald little heads warm. Since most of your heat escapes out your head, a baby can get pretty cold pretty fast fresh out of the tub. Not necessary, by any means, but they're damn cute.

3. Baby washcloths are softer, yes.

4. They make travel high chairs?

5. Playpens have sheets now?

6. Diaper stacker?

7. I always kept a Ziploc for wet bibs; they make disposables now that I would probably use instead for messy food.

8. Never used one.

i am utterly disgusted and horrified by the lack of adequate children's dinnerware. it's all plastic (i can't even get into how i feel about "take and toss" as a brand) or melamine or unspeakably ugly. i want real cups and plates. maybe i'll just buy a small stack of corelle. that stuff won't break on concrete.

Yes. But babies heads get cold pretty quickly, so it's nice to help keep the body heat in while you're drying/diapering/changing. Not necessary, but nice to have.

are baby washcloths specially soft? Yes. They are best for runny noses and diaper-rashed bums, IMO. I use a normal (soft) washcloth with DD every night. But the baby ones are nice when her skin is super tender.

can't i just get the travel one and use it in my home? Yes. No need for both, unless you're traveling w/the baby every month.

why don't playpens use the same size sheets as a crib? To piss you off.

where is the diaper stacker supposed to go? it is going in the closet, and the actual diapers are going into a drawer underneath the changing pad. <--- this is what I did, exactly. I filled my stacker with clean clothes for the next size up.

how many bibs do you go through? IMO, that depends on the outfit. I bought probably 20 bibs (in grand total) and 15 of them are hella cheap. In the beginning, you'll need 1-2 a day, if your baby doesn't spit up much. Once you start solids, all bets are off and maybe you use one at every meal + one for milk/drooling.

FWIW, for a while, you're going to want the absorbent + waterproof bibs. They're more gentle on the baby's skin.

I kept mine up until DD was pulling up on the crib and tried to stand on it. So, around 7 months. I think she's worse about being near the crib rails now than she ever was as a baby. And I had it up mostly as decoration.

Only the cuteness. I threw one pack on the registry but I figure a towel is a towel is a towel. I"m a Hoopy Frood who knkows where my towel is though.

I bought some super-de-duper-clearance cheap because we're doing cloth diapes and I sewed them into wipes. And I got some as a gift which I left as theya re to be burp/clean-up type cloths. But I"m also a hoopy frood who can find a washcloth

So they can get more $ out of you, duh. (I haven't bothered w/ playpen sheets...SHOOT. Gotta add those to the registry.

Because of the pesky cloth thing affecting how we arrange diapers, ours is hanging from a hook on the wall next to the changing table. it just holds the prefolds though.

They actually sell clippy things for using towels as bibs, for realsies.
(I have a few I got as gifts...I figure I can sew a strap to those pesky wips ans washcloths if I musth)

One came w/ our set--we're NOT USING.
Sure, it keeps the kid's arm from getting caught...but caught arm = painful but they'll recover. Suffocation is harder to recover from.
So cost/benefit = no bumper, IMO.
They sell the mesh breathable ones if you wanna but, really, the research is pretty clear on why they're not liked by doctors, APA, etc IMO

Is the stroller blanket the thing that specifically fits around teh edges of teh stroller, like a shower cap with a hole for their face? Maybe a stroller blanket is a little smaller? IDK. We never had a specific "stroller blanket."

Yes, the hood is for keeping wet baby warm, though we rarely used it. The baby towels are also thinner, which makes it easier to dry in their little crevices (<--not code for genitalia - those freaks have crevices everywhere with their little michelin-man arms). We also don't reuse the baby towels, because otherwise I'm afraid I'll be using the same towel on them for weeks. Besides, they are sometimes still yucky in parts when they dry off, or they puke or pee immediately upon bathtub exit. So we have a LOT of baby towels so we don't have to do laundry every damn day.

They are softer and, again, sometimes easier for cleaning in the crevices. And they are hella cheap, like 30 cents each for the cheapie gerber ones. Worth it. Did you decide on cloth diapering? We used baby washcloths for baby wipes when we were CDing. WAY cheaper than "cloth wipes" that the cloth diaper sites/stores try to sell you and 100% as effective.

eh. We just have a regular one and use it at home and use the restaurant's high chair when we go out. When we visited my parents, Des sat in someone's lap to eat. MIL has a cheap high chair at her house since she has 4 local grandchildren under the age of 2. FWIW, I'd wait on buying the high chair. You won't need it for 4-6 months, and you might then have a better idea of what fits in your lifestyle-with-baby.

Yes, to piss you off. But also so you don't have to drag around something crib-sized when you go to the park or bring your baby to work.

We saw no need for a diaper stacker or even for a changing table. We got an adult-sized dresser and put a changing pad on top. Diapers went in the top drawer, along with various rash creams and extra wipes. It's worked fabulously well, and they will be able to use the dressers all the way until college. Baby furniture is so tiny, and their clothes get big really fast. I didn't want to be buying a new dresser in 5 years.

Even though Dex was a puker, we didn't go through too many bibs. Mostly because the bibs were no match for his puke, so we didn't bother. Once we hit purees and solids, we used one bib per meal for about a year. He doesn't really wear a bib now (again, it's no match for the mess he makes when he is eating yogurt). I think we have a lot, though, which is handy for not wanting to do laundry.

You can't ever actually use it. When they're itty bitty, the SIDS risk will freak you out too much (and they don't need it, because they're not rolling around to bump into the crib anyway). Then when they ARE rolling, you don't want them to roll and bury their little nose into it. Then when they are pulling up, you can't have it in there because they will use it to climb on to try to get out of the crib. We used the breathable bumper because yes, his arms occasionally got stuck, but also becasue it served very well to keep the pacifiers inside the crib. We have 10-12 in there so he can find one in the night when he wakes up. (That's Des. Dex has been off pacis since about 13 or 14m. But we did the same for Dex when he was littler.)

The hood keeps their heads warm. Once they grow hair, it will also help soak up up the water while you dry them off and put on a diaper.

Ours don't seem any different. DD likes them because they are different colors and embroidered with different animals, but they're not a must-have.

A lot of times, the home high chairs have a lot of features that the travel kind don't--tray insert you can pop in the dishwasher, better padding, recline settings, that kind of thing.

If a playpen used the same size sheet as a crib, it would be one hell of a large playpen. Roughly the same size as a crib.

We never used ours. DD's diapers are in the top drawer of her dresser/changing table. I need to pack that stacker away, but for now it's in her closet. Sometimes it amuses her to play with it for a few minutes.

DD was a dribbler but not a drooler, so we probably used one per feeding. We have one neoprene bib and it works as well as the cotton or plastic. Now that she feeds herself, we mostly use those giant plastic ones that look like the lead apron you wear when you get dental x-rays.

By the time DD could move herself to her bumper, she was able to roll/move to avoid suffucation. I've always used ours.

I'm not really sure what they are. Unless you are talking about a JJ Cole Bundle Me, in which case it goes in the car seat. It's not necessary and doesn't do anything more than a normal blanket.

I still use hooded towels for DD. As nico said, babies get cold very easily and it's nice to have that extra layer on her head, even if it is to walk 3 steps into her room to get her dressed.

My diaper stacker is hanging on the wall right next to the changing table. It's not efficient to have the diapers across the room from where you will be changing the baby.

As a newborn, DD went through 3-4 a day. Also, keep in mind that bibs come in different coverage sizes. I had a ton of bibs when DD was brand new and realized they didn't have the same coverage when she got bigger. I wish I had realized this in the beginning and bought larger bibs in the first place.

i am never going to those idiots on the tb so it's not going to happen.

we cannot CD without a washer/dryer in the apt.

i think i just need to find corn plates and cups. i really don't like these plastic ones -- they offend my green side as well as my cheap side. not that i'm a hoarder, but the tossing aspect is really ... gah to me.

y'all take playpens to the park? i thought the point was to be outside, not just looking.

i'll hold off on the high chair. i am leaning towards one that i can just push to the table, rather than tray only.

1. I don't know what a stroller blanket is, but my guess is the only difference is size. A regular throw may be too big and receiving blankets would be very warm. It's possible they have a cut out for the stroller straps though.

2. Get the hooded towels, but in toddler sized. Then they will last longer.

3. High chair- if I had it to do over I'd go for the space saver one you just put on a chair. That should travel easily enough.

4. Playpen sheets- we just folded a regular sheet and tucked it under the pad when we traveled. We didn't use one at home though.

5.We didn't have a diaper stacker. I fill the drawer under the changing pad and the others go in his closet.

6. Bibs- 6let was not a spitter upper so we never used bibs until he started solids. Then it was just one at every meal. All of ours are absorbent and we've never had an issue. When we go out I put it in a ziploc to take home. Or the reality is I would forget the bib and just tie a napking around his neck.

7. Bumper- We didn't use it until he as ~1. Then he started rolling around in his sleep and knocking his head on the rails. He'd hit so hard it would wake him up so to protect the noggin we put the bumper on.
