Time to get my butt in shape!

SO.... its been a LONG couple years medically, and part of what that's done is taken someone who has always been UBER active (I started martial arts at 6 years old, and its been a HUGE part of my life since) and forced me to basically sit around and limit most things I do either because I'm injured (had some problems with a leg), really sick from treatments, or have no energy...

We're down to just 2 medications a day, I'm feeling much better and got the Drs go ahead to hit the gym again (as long as I remember to work into it, he felt the need to remind me of that for some reason...).

I stepped on a scale last night, and it looks like all of this has caused me to put on a total of 32 lbs, I would settle for losing an even 30 by Sept...

Last night FI and I went grocery shopping, and we are doing the Paleo diet to kick start our healthy eating. Once we have gotten into the habit of following something strict as that, we'll allow ourselves some changes (for example its no dairy, but I think adding in a little here or there as long as its not the main focus of a meal would be ok).

So here it starts... the journey to lose 30 lbs!!!!!!!!

Re: Time to get my butt in shape!

  • I'll be doing it with you.... starting in Jan... I need to get through the holidays first.  I would love to lose 40 lbs but will settle for 30.... I gained 55 while prego and lost 30 and have since gained another 10 or so.  :( its time for it to come off... I HATE the way I look. I avoid mirrors now.

  • I joined a gym as well but I am waiting until after the holidays to start :)  Another good website for healthy recipes and calorie counting is sparkpeople.com, you can even make grocery lists from recipes you find!  I love that site!
  • The nice thing with the Paleo diet is that FI and I figure it should be easy to follow over the holidays because our favourite foods are still good to go.... we can still eat all the turkey that we want :)
  • im a dessert freak.... I dont care so much about the turkey.  I could eat just the cookies and pies. yummm

I'm the same.  I'm a little less than 40lbs over weight right now.  My FI and I will be starting an exercise routine and diet after the holidays.  Kirab- I'm the same.  I LOVE all the sweets!!

  • my dress comes in in less than 2 weeks and im few pounds heavier than i was when i bought the dress, im afraid it isnt going to fit!
  • I have never been a sweets person, its always been veggies/fruit/the turkey hahhaa... I mean if I have junk food and a fruit platter at home, I will pick the fruit...
  • I'd love to lose 30lbs before the wedding too.  However, that's all dependent upon what my doctor finds wrong with my knees.  If I can't run, ride my bike, or even use the eliptical then I'm going to be in a rough spot.  Hopefully this whole mess gets figured out and fixed soon so that I can get back into a workout routine.

Kirab - I'm the same way, I love all the Italian cookies that we have this time of year and I'm the worst offender because I bake most of them! Forget the turkey, give me the cookies and cheesecake :-)

I gained about 35 pounds when I moved to Georgia and I have been working out since September.  I kicked my routine into high gear at the beginning of this month and I'm now on Day 22 (obviously).  I have much higher energy and my endurance is improving drastically.  I'm continuing my routine through the holidays & the rest of my life: it's a lifestyle change, not a diet to me.  I don't have a goal weight, but I know what I want to look like and I WILL get there before the wedding.

For those of you waiting till after the holidays... I say start now instead.  It's a holiDAY, not a holiMONTH... whatever you do on Christmas & New Year's is fine... but that's no reason to make excuses for the other 7 days before the new year.  You don't gain 5 pounds from 2 days of holiday goodness.  Just sayin :)  Even if you don't have time to workout on those days (I know the holidays are really busy for some people), you can still watch what you're eating and make healthy choices.

Aaaand consider this my first post back officially.  Today is my last day of work until January 2 and I will therefore have a lot more time to hang out on TK.  My month-ish-long hiatus is nearly at an end and I'm so happy to be back!!

I feel your pain about the knees.  I woke up in excruciating pain in both of mine.  I was hit by a car in September, and I've gained 15 pounds, still eating right.  I'm the body type that needs the exercise.

I just got the go ahead to only use the stationary bike for cardio, because that's what is used for physical therapy on the knee.  And light workouts.  Which is killing me because I'm a Beach Body workout freak.  I was doing Turbo Fire and Chalean Extreme Hybrid.  I cant even do Jillian Michaels, because he said its too much strain on my knees.

I think I'm screwed, sense I purchased a very fitted dress. I'm calling my doctor to order meal shakes through him.

<div>I too am in desperate need to get back on track with my diet. I am a stress eater and have packed on the pounds in the past three years due to an incredibly stressful situation with my ex-husband and my daughter. I started using the Eat Stop Eat diet, which goes along somewhat with the Paleo diet. It helped me so much before in learning to not run to food for stress relief. I really need to get back on it though...it doesn't help having a fiance that doesn't really try to eat healthy or exercise though. :o(</div>
  • I'm planning on getting back to the gym as well. I was doing great this summer with P90x but then I hurt my elbow which held me up for a couple months. Now I'm just lazy and keep making excuses not to get back to it. So my FI and I will be jumping in to this shortly. Good luck everyone!

  • That's usually my problem, I get all into but FI still eats junk... he's doing Paleo with me this time :)

I was all into Jillian Michaels too but then the doctor told me no more until my knees are fixed.  It was actually Jillian Michaals 30 Day Shred that helped me figure out that something was wrong.  Doing all those squats killed me for days afterwards and not in the gluts like they're supposed to, in my knees.  I'm hoping it's not going to require surgery because I just don't have time for that.

I hope your knees feel better soon, I never knew how much a person relies on one pair of joints for keeping in shape until I couldn't use them :-\

  • Best of luck to all of you!! It's always good to eat right and feel healthy - inside and out :)

  • I need to lose about 30lbs too. Maybe we should start a support group on here- it would be cheaper than WW on line. And for those of you that are thinking of trying Zumba- it is awesome (for me at least) I have lost weight quickly with it and I enjoy it so I actually go, you just have to find the right instructor. If you can find a class in your area there is also water Zumba (I forget the correct name) and that is supposed to be easy on the knees.
  • We could def do a support group on here :) There is a daily accountability thread on the Destination Weddings board and I know its great for all of us for support :)
  • I definitely need to get back on track.  After playing lacrosse from junior high through college I feel very inactive.  I've done a few road races but it's the months of training that cause me to slack off.  In my mind if I had a game every week I would REALLY have something to stay in shape for.  I'm promising myself to go to the gym at least 3x a week and to try and get a long run in at some point.  Best of luck to everyone with their goals!

Also, GIS always has a daily workout accountability thread.  I've gotten to "know" the posters on there and feel weird when I don't respond to it during the week.

Zumba is amazing but you do have to find the right instructor!  I love it and have been doing it since this past June.  I go on average 4 days a week for at least 1 hour. I do both Zumba and Zumba Plus which involves focused toning.  I've lost inches and toned.  I do not weigh myself.  I am more about appearance and how I feel and look in my clothes as well as how good I feel doing my daily activities.   Love it! :)

    Love is the ultimate superpower.
It can make you weak and strong simultaneously.

  • i want to lose about 5-10 pounds before my wedding, and also try to tone my shoulders/back after looking at pictures of me trying dresses on, that's one area that i need to work on.

Dan and I workout about 5 times a week normally, but i decided to start doing some strength training for my shoulders/back with him about 3 times a week. I think I am getting stronger/more toned, but I am actually gaining weight, which sort of sucks. i know it's muscle, but.. ugh, as long as the dress still fits right? i ordered a size up too, so i'm not really worried. i just want too look my best (obviously).

i think i need to get a little more serious when it comes to working out. yes, we go alot and i have a set routine, but i think i need to push myself a little more when i'm there. i always do cardio for as long as i feel like, and i think maybe i need to push myself a little bit past that point.

i also need to work on eating better. yes, i am a vegan, and when i first went vegan i ate super healthy(and lost a bunch of weight) but now i've realized how much junk food i can still eat, so i do, and that's not so good. i need to stop eating (and baking), cookies and sweets and things.

over the past year and a half i have lost 15 pounds, but that's basically because i graduated college and therefore am no longer drinking everyday.
    Happily married since 9/1/2012!

  • I def recommend Jillian Micheal's DVDs. I'm an avid gym goer and train hard but the days I can't get there I put on her get ripped in 30 and it kicks my butt. I do her yoga twice a week as well and they are great workouts. In combination with spin classes and circuit weight training it a perfect recipe for a fit and tonedbody. I eat dessert every night and still have abs :)

  • I agree with pretty much everything Jacqui said. I knew I wanted to lose at least 15 lbs before the wedding and instead of waiting til the new year, I started over the summer. I lost the weight MUCH faster than I thought I would which actually worried me a little because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to maintain it, but so far I'm doing a pretty good job.

There's 2 apps I use that helped enormously - MyFitnessPal for calorie counting/food tracking, and Adidas MiCoach for working out. For the PPs that can't work out due to various ailments, MyFitnessPal is fantastic because it will take that into consideration when determining how many calories you should be consuming per day.

I really want to start toning now, particularly my abs. I bought resistance bands months ago and have yet to actually use them.

  • Hey ladies,

I am in a serious rut physically!! In 2010 my fiance trained for a triathlon, and while I didn't compete with him, I trained right along side of him. After the race we both totally fell off the wagon and we've been struggling ever since.

It doesn't help that we're trying to relocate and that's super stressful but I'm sick of making excuses! I know that we'll both feel better once we're active and healthy, but yikes, it's tough to get back into :-/

Maybe an accountability thread would help! Love the idea!

  • I would love to do a weight loss support group on 9/2012!  I lost 30 pounds from Nov. 2010-April 2011 but I haven't been able to lose any more (ideally another 20 pounds, but I'd settle for 10-15 and be happy) because I am having some really severe hypothyroid issues.  My levels are crazy high, which makes it harder to lose weight and you're constantly tired.  My Dr. JUST upped my medication so fingers crossed!!
