I have no idea if something else like it exists but I had no idea how much was available in my area until then.

I would like to know where I can get 4 large pizzas for $10. Even at the "fast food" pizza places around here, that buys maybe one pizza.

[QUOTE]Eating healthier definitely costs more. I buy frozen veggies because its just that much cheaper - plus we have time to go shopping once every two weeks (if we're lucky - sometimes I have to cook what's left for another two). One single green pepper can set you back $5 sometimes. It's ridiculous, when you can buy four large pizzas for $10. I try my very best, cooking as many veggies in as I think he'll eat. He has a big appetite... so he's usually still hungry on what I've given him (after I've barely eaten to make sure he has enough) and he goes foraging for something else. Usually pop tarts or whatever else snack he's got sitting around for himself, I don't touch the stuff. It sucks, but right now, we can't afford to feed both of us properly... so, he gets the bulk.

He shoves them into the cart when we shop, I don't notice they're there til we're at the checkout. He *says* they're for snacks at work, but like I say, he's a forager. And he's not exactly all about the smart choices. He bought cereal bars last time but he didn't like them much, so I guess they're mine now (though I don't like the chocolate chip flavour he picked).

We went to costco with some friends over the weekend. I stocked up on paper products we needed (there's only two of us right now so we don't shop there normally). Found a perdue frozen chicken breast bag for $20 (in Safeway we pay $15 for 4/5 breasts) put it in the cart... find a $10 block of cheese in there he's never tried and I won't eat.

Amt, if your FI is really that hungry and you go without so he can fill up on fucking poptarts you need to start buying rice and beans in bulk or something. That way you can both eat your fill on cheap food.

ETA: And maybe start shopping without him. Or you know, take the stuff out of the cart if you guys can't afford it.

• It's not hard to find frozen pizzas on sale for 3/$10 or 4/$10.

And where the hell are you paying $5 for a single green pepper?? ours our regularly $0.99. Red or orange peppers are more, but never more than $6 for 3.

Frozen pizzas are ALWAYS on sale at my grocery store, one brand or another. Just this past weekend the huge hungry man frozen dinners (the huge ass ones) were on sale for $2. The problem is though that crap like that wont fill you, will not nourish you and just sucks.

I feel that way also about "healthy" frozen lunches, calorie wise - a friend of mine at work has frozen lunches every day and we have compared calories and he will have a tiny 7" wide pizza and it is the same calories as my ceasar salad with shrimp in it, crackers, a fruit, an applesauce and nibbly cheese. Thats stupid.

I think eating seasonally is a key here. It's March. Apples, peppers, squashes are going to be expensive in March. Asparagus, peas, and corn are going to be expensive in November. In August, you can get six ears of corn for $1. Bell peppers should be 2/$1 in the summer, of course the'll be $4-5 (depending on color) when they're out of season.

That's different from the healthy food price argument, IMO.

amt- Costco is totally worth it, even for only two people. We've saved far more than the $50 membership easily. Just the produce and meat is worth it, not to mention the paper products. (and dog treats in our house.)

I totally agree Pirate. But when we were talking about locally... there is no fresh produce here November-March.
• I was at the grocery store yesterday and overheard a mom negotiating with her kid who looked about 3 or 4 over which tv dinner he wanted. He kept wanting the one with the chocolate pudding in it, and her response was "No honey, we will get another treat for you in the cookie aisle, pick a healthy dinner first"

I wanted to bang my head against the wall. I don't care about the cookies/treat thing, but the fact that she seriously was calling a tv dinner healthy for her toddler.

Well I'm currently in the process of getting a job (got a second interview on saturday and still sending applications) so right now we're living paycheck to paycheck on one. We have netflix, no cable. Don't buy alcohol. Don't have cellphones (which has caused issues). My wages will help some but not much... we're hoping for a move to Texas pretty soon. COL here is way too high. Gas is probably the biggest thing... he has an hour commute each way because he didn't want me sitting in the ghetto at night alone waiting for him to come home.

Plus, every so often the immigration people want another chunk for something. My green card application cost more than our wedding. My dad's in very poor health... if I want to see him, they want another $500 for the privilege... other random unexpected bills. We're in a much better position now than we were in January, but its still pretty tight.
• Not food related, but my son is taking a nap and farting up a storm... it is sort of hilarious.

If nothing else you guys have reminded me to start looking for a CSA again. :)
• Our farmers market opens on Sunday. I can't wait! There is a year round one but we're lazy and rarely drive to it. The Sunday market is right by our house and I plan on walking up there every day.

AMT - I don't know if you're actually in Baltimore or not but I know I've never paid that much for a pepper or chicken breast. Maaaaybe if you're shopping at the Safeway in Canton but I don't even think they're that crazy.

• Yes i do think its more expensive to eat healthier and thats why the poor tend to be overweight and undernourished no i dont think we spend enough on nutrition especially child nutrition also registered dietitans are usually not cover by insurance companies with the exception of special cases

• Amt, I give you credit for trying to make do, honestly. I think you need to have a chat with your H though. if he wants stuff to fill him up, get some beans. or even some steal-cut oats. you'd be surprised at how far a bag of those go!

I don't believe that the people who lived in your area in the times before big box grocery stores and interstate highways didn't eat produce for 5 months at a time. They ate cellar crops, things that stored well. Sure, you can't get a strawberry, but you can get an acorn squash.

Good to know.

Dog treats.. aye.. we found a huge box of dental treats that will keep Nimo going for a month at less than half the price than we'd normally pay.

The food itself didn't look bad either so its definitely worth thinking about.

We're right down on the Eastern Shore. I guess it doesn't help that safeway is his shop of choice, but where we are, it's the only choice. We have a couple dirty convenience stores, and a new grocery store just opened up, but its produce was rotting on the shelves. Even Safeway is thirty minutes from us.

I guess, because I grew up in an agricultural region, I didn't realize that eating seasonally and "putting up" food for winter wasn't the norm until I was an adult.

Gardening, canning, freezing, raising cattle because you like to eat beef, having chickens for eggs and a Jersey cow in the barn for the milk seemed normal to me growing up.

I know it's not possible for everyone to raise their own food like that, but the principles of eating seasonally and storing what you can still hold true.
• To be honest, I don't think I've ever really calculated it. I don't really have a food budget, and just buy what I need/want. Some junk/unhealthy food, some healthy. I try to only plan healthy meals anyway so the junk is mostly snacks.

I have noticed though that Whole Foods is way more expensive than other grocery stores. I can't shop there. We try to get stuff from farmer's markets, and we grow a lot of our own salad stuff, which definitely helps on cost because H loves salad.
• Am I on crack or are steel cut oats way more expensive than regular oatmeal? I can buy a huge cannister of traditional Quaker oatmeal for something like 3.99 and the steel cut oats, in the MUCH smaller cannister, are fucking 6.99.

Some, but we usually spot them on the way out to Virginia, and they're gone by the time we're coming home. Plus they're only out for like two months when they are out.

There's a CSA program he's been thinking about, and says he'd like to do, but he hasn't done anything about it yet. I think it's connected with his work or with a co-worker or something so I need to kick him in the butt about that one.

I was eating those frozen meals for a while because they are easy and cheap but I realized that I was hungry 10 minutes after. I can make a lunch that is about the same calorie wise and way more filling. Plus, I took a look at the sodium content in those meals and they are crazy! The sodium is also why I'm trying to steer clear of any sort of pre-packaged foods.
